Asking for career advice
Hi everyone,
I’m in a dilemma and need advice. I started as a system administrator in a small company, managing web hosting and servers for PHP websites on Linux with Nginx and Apache. After two years, I felt the need to grow and work in a team, so I switched to a junior system engineer role. Unfortunately, I didn’t research the job well and now find myself doing basic tasks for a foreign hosting company—essentially glorified chat support, slightly above entry-level tasks, with flexible shifts I struggle to adjust to.
I feel stuck and disappointed. I have an AWS certification and solid experience with Linux and web hosting, but I’m unsure about my next steps. How hard is it to transition into DevOps? Are there roles focused solely on AWS? What career path should I aim for and what skills should I prioritize? I’d really appreciate any guidance.
Thank you!

I’ve been in a similar situation, where I ended up doing a lot of basic support stuff. My advice: don’t be afraid to make your next move after gaining some skills. AWS is a great start.
Have you talked to your manager about taking on more responsibilities?

[needles](username) I don't think it's possible. There are people way more skilled and experienced than me stuck in their position.

[needles](username) that's not what I meant. They aren't giving promotions. That's an issue for a lot of guys here.

A Team Lead
There are roles specifically focusing on AWS, such as AWS Solutions Architect, AWS DevOps Engineer, and AWS Cloud Engineer. Gaining hands-on experience with AWS services (EC2, S3, Lambda, etc.) will help you stand out.

[vivaciousbhindi](username) Even though your current role might feel frustrating, try to learn more about the infrastructure, scripting (Python, Bash), and cloud automation. Small wins like improving processes or automating workflows can lead to bigger opportunities.

[cleantonic](username) Keep looking for roles that match your skills and growth potential. Don’t be afraid to apply to companies that emphasize cloud technologies, as they often have more specialized roles.

DevOps is a great direction, especially with your Linux and AWS certification. Focus on automating tasks, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and containerization tools like Docker/Kubernetes.
