How to pick a hi-res streaming service for Sonos
- The best hi-res streaming service for Sonos owners depends on user needs, but the four services with hi-res audio and compatible with Sonos are Amazon Music, Apple Music, Qobuz and Tidal. Amazon is the least expensive option and Tidal is the most expensive costing $13 per month. Catalog sizes are similar between the four at around 100 million songs, with Tidal offering more than 110 million tracks on its homepage. Apple Music has an import function and can upload any digital music owned by its users. Spatial audio, a 3D, immersive sound format, is available on Amazon Music, Apple Music and Tidal, but not on Qobuz.
- Most streaming services require users to use the Sonos app, as opposed to AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth, which are lossy technologies. Within the app, listening experiences can differ with Amazon Music, and Tidal giving access to an artist's top tracks, but Qobuz's integration is less user friendly because going to an artist page within Sonos just gives a list of their albums by default, with no top tracks anywhere in sight.
