Can Comet Stir Up A Sneaker Revolution With Its Storytelling Playbook?
- Indian D2C sneaker brand, Comet, has taken advantage of the latest trend in India’s footwear market by employing a storytelling approach and selling shoes through its website.
- Mid-priced sneaker brands like Neeman’s, Yoho, Rare Rabbit and Solethreads, have developed cool and colourful sneakers, while established retailers such as Bata and Campus have started to revamp their ranges in line with global sneaker trends.
- Comet installs limited-edition drops of sneakers with unique stories, this has helped the brand build up over 12,000 monthly customers and a sneaker community of 1.6 lakhs+ followers on Instagram.
- CEO Utkarsh Gupta said “No one is telling stories through sneakers in India. Most brands rely on celebrities and traditional marketing, but we didn’t have the budget for that. What we did have is a deep understanding of emotions and culture”.
- While Comet has scaled, CEO Utkarsh Gupta has placed importance on Comet telling local and personal stories, as well as offering value for money for an ‘aspirational’ Indian sneaker market.
- The sneakers are all variations of one model but come in different colours as 15 SKUs, however, Comet’s success comes from its limited-edition runs of unique sneaker designs.
- Comet started expanding its physical presence in India and is now available in multi-brand outlets like Broadway and select sneaker stores such as Dawntown.
- The company has raised more than $7m and counts Elevation Capital and Nexus Venture Partners as its key investors, and in 2025 India’s sneaker market is expected to be worth $3.1 bn.
- Comet is planning on expanding its portfolio to 45-50 SKUs and will look to launch 3-4 high-street physical stores in 2021 starting with Bengaluru.
- The founders are positioning themselves away from the first-time sneaker user who are more likely to go for cheaper or ‘flashier’ established brands.
