Lucid Motors Eyes Tech Dominance: The “Intel Inside” of the EV World
- Lucid Motors aims to become the “Intel Inside” of the automotive world by licensing its powertrain and battery technology to other automakers.
- CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson envisions a model where 80% of Lucid's business revolves around licensing its advanced EV technology, while only 20% is dedicated to building cars.
- By adopting a software lock-in strategy, Lucid could generate continuous revenue streams and have a competitive edge in an industry where hardware profit margins are typically thin.
- While the vision is ambitious, making guarantees is challenging, and the success of Lucid's licensing model remains to be seen.

Why Lucid's CEO Thinks 180-Mile EVs Are 'The Future'
- Lucid Motors, known for long-range electric cars, plans to introduce a 180-mile range EV on its midsize platform in the future.
- CEO Peter Rawlinson believes that lower range EVs will be the future of transportation, especially for city dwellers.
- Rawlinson argues that as charging infrastructure improves, drivers won't need cars with hundreds of miles of range as a buffer.
- He predicts that by 2030, a 200-mile range will be acceptable for a family SUV, considering most Americans drive less than 40 miles daily.
- Lucid's strategy involves starting with high-end, long-range vehicles before moving on to mass-market, lower-range EVs to drive profitability.
- By adopting cheaper battery chemistry and efficient technology, Lucid aims to lower EV costs for mass adoption.
- Rawlinson emphasizes the importance of Level 2 AC plugs for overnight charging in places like apartment complexes and offices.
- Despite focusing on lower-range EVs, Lucid will continue to offer high-range, road-trip-friendly vehicles for those valuing convenience.
- Rawlinson believes in the mass adoption of EVs to benefit the environment through cost-effective battery solutions.
- Lucid remains committed to delivering a range of EV options, catering to different consumer preferences and needs.

Lucid Aims To Be 20% Car Company, 80% Tech Supplier: CEO
- Lucid Motors CEO and CTO, Peter Rawlinson, aims to have 80% of the company's future business based on licensing its underlying EV technology to established car manufacturers.
- Rawlinson views Lucid as a supplier of components like Intel supplied microprocessors to IBM and Apple in the early days of the internet.
- The majority of revenue would come from selling the company's EV powertrains to other car manufacturers, giving them the opportunity to upgrade and improve their product.
- A shop window was needed for Lucid's automotive technology, hence the need to manufacture cars. The ultimate intention is to produce one million EVs per year by the early 2030s.
- The flagship model, the Air Sapphire, has 1,234 horsepower, reaching 60 mph in under two seconds and still manages to go an EPA-estimated 427 miles per charge.
- Despite the 3% increase in Global EV sales in 2019, versus 2018, Lucid has no intentions to reduce their production of EV's, and instead have expanded their reach and doubled their production capacity. They believe, reducing their reliance on fossil fuels, making use of renewable resources and sustainable means would pay off in the future.
- One customer that has signed up to the Aston Martin deal is Aston Martin, which inked a $450m deal to use Lucid's motors, battery technology and Wunderbox, which facilitates charging, in its upcoming electric model.
- Lucid intends to facilitate future arrangements uniquely with automakers, by licensing their EV tech, so that stakeholders can manufacture key components in their own factories.
- As of now, the original equipment manufacturers solution is costly, and it continuously threatens the new and existing automakers cost, as EV's have fewer components than Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) counterparts;
- Edging in on a larger market share for EV technology, Lucid is developing a unique vision for a sustainable mode of transportation.
