Abandoned History: Tariffs, Toyota, and the 1984 Motor Industry Development Plan (Part II)
- The Australian government debuted its Motor Industry Development Plan in mid-1984, the plan intended to cut the number of domestically produced vehicles in half, close down underutilized production facilities, and reduce import caps and tariffs on foreign vehicles.
- As part of the plan, domestic Australian and Japanese automakers were forced to work together to create badge engineered vehicles, with Ford, Holden, Nissan, and Toyota being prominent victims.
- The new vehicle in question was the Holden Astra, a lightly reworked Nissan Pulsar which was assembled in different locations.
- Holden stylists spent about 15 minutes reworking the Pulsar into the Astra, and changes were limited to a different grille and the requisite badges around the body exterior.
- The Astra was updated alongside the new Pulsar (N13) when Australian production switched over a full year after the rest of the world.
- The second generation Astra was available as a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback with Engine choices expanded, and included a 1.6-liter good for 74 horses or a 1.8 that managed 106 horsepower.
- The N12 and N13 Pulsar/Astra agreement ended up the only pairing between Nissan and Holden.
- Toyota had come knocking at General Motors’ door about an Australian collaboration, and the two companies were much more familiar with one another.
- The unhappy Nissan-Holden marriage dissolved in July of 1989, just two years into local N13 production.
- While Nissan was not left high and dry, it worked up additional product swaps with Ford which produced an SUV, a ute, and a five-door liftback.

Holden parent ‘aware’ of Commodore theft crisis, solution no closer
- Holden Commodores are being stolen in large numbers across Australia, due to the availability of an easy-to-buy tool that allows thieves to start and steal the cars with minimal effort.
- The tool can disable the car's alarm, delete the original keys, and pair a new set of keys, making it easy for criminals to steal the vehicles.
- Former parent company General Motors Australia and New Zealand (GMANZ) is aware of the issue but mentioned that the purchase of this tool is unregulated.
- Temporary deterrents, such as mechanical locks, PIN-coded immobilizers, and relocated horns, may help reduce the likelihood of theft.

Walkinshaw’s final Holden VL Commodore uncovered and on sale
- The last example of the car which put Walkinshaw on the path of being Holden’s in-house performance arm for the best part of three decades has come out of hiding, and its owners are willing to sell.
