Standard chartered names former Absa boss Maria Ramos as chair
- Standard Chartered Plc has named Maria Ramos, a South African banking veteran, as its next chair, replacing Jose Vinals.
- Ramos joined the Standard Chartered board as an independent non-executive director in January 2021 and has a career that includes serving as director-general at the Ministry of Finance under the late President Nelson Mandela.
- Ramos's appointment follows an 'extensive global search' and she will replace Vinals at the annual meeting on May 8, pending regulatory approval.
- Standard Chartered has undergone various leadership changes in recent years, and Ramos's appointment is the latest change at the top.

SA factory moods dims on Mozambique trade disruptions
- South Africa's factory mood fell for the third straight month in January due to trade disruptions with Mozambique, jet fuel shortages, and the planned closure of steel production units.
- Absa Group's purchasing managers' index declined to 45.3 in January, the lowest reading since August.
- The disruptions with Mozambique's post-election unrest and fuel shortages affected production and demand.
- The closure of ArcelorMittal SA's longs business and concerns about steel plant shutdowns further added to the contraction in manufacturing sector.
