Job Description
The Packet Core Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and troubleshooting of the packet core network infrastructure. This critical role involves ensuring the reliable operation of data, voice, and multimedia services over the mobile core network. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to maintain and enhance the overall performance, security, and scalability of the network.
- Design, deploy, and configure packet core network components, including Gateway, PCRF, DNS, DHCP, and other related elements.
- Ensure smooth integration and interoperability with the radio access network (RAN) and other supporting infrastructure.
- Work on the implementation of IP protocols (e. g. , IPv4/IPv6), routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), and Quality of Service (QoS) parameters within the core network.
- Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting of packet core network systems, quickly identifying issues and applying corrective measures.
- Optimize network performance, throughput, and availability, ensuring the network meets performance SLAs and KPIs.
- Analyze traffic patterns, identify bottlenecks, and apply necessary network tuning.
- Implement and enforce security measures within the packet core, ensuring compliance with internal policies and industry standards.
- Monitor and mitigate security threats, conducting audits and applying patches when necessary.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (including R&D, Operations, and Customer Support) to ensure the delivery of seamless network services.
- Generate performance reports and propose solutions for network improvements.
- Provide technical support and training to junior engineers and other team members.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date network configuration documentation, including design diagrams, capacity planning, and troubleshooting guides.
- Ensure adherence to best practices, industry standards, and regulatory requirements in all aspects of the packet core network.
- In-depth understanding of IP-based networking, including TCP/IP, UDP, NAT, DHCP, DNS, and VPN technologies.
- Expertise in mobile network architectures, including the Packet Core (SGW, PGW, MME, PCRF).
- Proficient in mobile network protocols such as GTP, Diameter, and SIP.
- Experience with MPLS, VPN, and IP-based routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, etc. ).
- Hands-on experience with packet core elements such as PGW (Packet Gateway), SGW (Serving Gateway), HSS (Home Subscriber Server), PCRF, and IMS components.
- Knowledge of mobile communication standards such as LTE, 5G, and IMS.
- Experience in network performance tuning, traffic analysis, and tools like Wireshark, SolarWinds, or similar.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to resolve issues quickly and efficiently in a live production environment.
- Knowledge of network security principles and practices (firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection, etc. ).
- Familiarity with security tools and best practices to secure mobile core networks.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Bachelor s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field. A Master s degree is a plus.
- 3 to 7 years of hands-on experience working in mobile network engineering, with a focus on the packet core network.
- Experience with designing, configuring, and maintaining packet core infrastructure in a service provider or telecommunications environment.
- Experience in troubleshooting network performance, reliability, and scalability issues in a multi-vendor environment.
- Prior exposure to cloud-based network architecture (e. g. , NFV, SDN) is a plus.
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or similar networking certifications.
- Certified Wireless Network Expert (CWNE) or related certifications in mobile networking.
