Geospatial Risk Specialist

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to join our dynamic Geo team in Bangalore. In this role, you will execute geospatial data processing projects and advance digital products for natural hazard assessment. Your contributions will enable Swiss Re to make confident underwriting decisions and maintain best-in-class Natural Catastrophe models. You will have the following responsibilities:

• Process and analyze geospatial data to contribute to the development of Swiss Re products and solutions.
• Develop and maintain scripts and pipelines to automate data processing and standardize workflows.
• Work closely with diverse teams across Swiss Re, providing geo-domain expertise, technical guidance, and support.
• Drive small projects independently. Coordinate and communicate effectively with other teams and stakeholders, provide regular project status updates, and ensure comprehensive and up-to-date project documentation.
• Proactively identify, report, and resolve any issues or conflicts that may arise within the team or project. Foster a collaborative and positive team environment.
• Scout for new ideas and development for positive outcomes

About the Team:

This role is embedded in the Catastrophe Geo Modelling team, which is in Zurich and Bangalore. The team advances the proprietary catastrophe modeling framework of Swiss Re and ensures that geospatial information is accurately considered in those models. Furthermore, the team develops user applications for risk assessment and insurance costing.

The overarching Catastrophe Perils department is responsible for Swiss Re s global natural catastrophe risk assessment. The department consists of 50 dedicated engineers and scientists in multi-faceted fields. We are mandated to advance probabilistic and proprietary modelling technology for earthquakes, windstorm and flood hazards, the largest and most refined company owned model framework in the re/insurance industry.

The department has a clear business mandate to grow this competitive edge in close collaboration with Swiss Re s underwriters and clients.

About You :

You are passionate about applying geospatial knowledge to natural-catastrophes and risk assessment. You have mid-level experience in the geospatial industry. You are up-to-date with the latest geo trends and possess excellent communication skills.

Requirement:

• Masters degree or equivalent in Geography, Geoinformatics, GIS, Remote Sensing, or Natural Sciences.
• Work experience in the geospatial industry, with a proven track record in geo data processing and analytics. Experience in (re)insurance and/or NatCat modeling is preferred.
• Proficiency in geospatial tools (QGIS, ESRI ArcMap, or ArcGIS Online) and programming (Python incl. following libraries GDAL, geopandas, rasterio). Strong skills in raster- and vector-data processing with the ability to analyze spatial data effectively and distill relevant insights.
• Basic understanding of relational databases and SQL.
• Experience in managing small projects independently.
• Self-driven, proactive, and detail oriented.

• Experience in other programming languages (e.g. R, Matlab) and Spark (including Sedona)
• Experience with PostGIS
• Experience with Palantir Foundry
• Experience in NatCat modelling
