Job Description

Job Summary

The IPDRG Medical Coding Team Leader will oversee the medical coding process for inpatient diagnoses and procedures using the IPDRG system. This position involves managing a team of medical coders, ensuring the accurate and timely coding of medical records, and maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations. The Team Leader will serve as a mentor, supervisor, and subject matter expert for the team, while also working to improve operational efficiency, coding accuracy, and adherence to best practices in IPDRG coding.


Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Supervision:
    • Supervise, mentor, and support a team of medical coders specializing in IPDRG coding.
    • Assign daily coding tasks to team members and ensure that productivity and accuracy goals are met.
    • Provide feedback, training, and performance evaluations to coding staff.
    • Facilitate team meetings and ensure effective communication between team members.
    • Resolve any coding-related queries or issues promptly.

  • Coding Accuracy & Compliance:
    • Ensure accurate and complete coding of inpatient cases according to IPDRG guidelines, ICD-10, and CPT coding systems.
    • Perform periodic audits of coded records to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to identify areas for improvement.
    • Monitor and enforce adherence to coding policies, procedures, and best practices.
    • Stay up-to-date with changes in coding guidelines, payer requirements, and regulations.

  • Quality Control & Process Improvement:
    • Identify trends in coding errors or inefficiencies and work with the team to develop solutions.
    • Implement and monitor corrective action plans for coding errors and inaccuracies.
    • Collaborate with other departments (such as billing, clinical, and compliance teams) to ensure seamless workflow and compliance.

  • Training& Development:
    • Conduct training sessions and workshops for new and existing coders on IPDRG coding principles, updates, and changes in coding practices.
    • Assist in the development of continuing education programs and certification opportunities for coding staff.

  • Reporting & Documentation:
    • Track and report team performance, coding accuracy rates, and departmental goals.
    • Maintain detailed records of coding decisions, audits, and any issues that arise.

  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Collaborate with other departments, including clinical, billing, and compliance teams, to ensure accurate data exchange and coding integrity.
    • Serve as the point of contact for coding-related inquiries from clinicians, billing teams, and other stakeholders.
    • Participate in meetings with healthcare providers and management to resolve coding discrepancies or challenges.

Required Qualifications


  • Certifications:
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification required.
    • Additional certifications related to inpatient coding (e.g., Certified Inpatient Coder or IPDRG-specific certifications) are a plus.

  • Experience:
    • At least 5 years of experience in medical coding, with a focus on IPDRG,ICD-10, and CPT coding systems.
    • Atleast 2 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role in a medical coding environment.

  • Skills:
    • In-depth knowledge of IPDRG coding, including inpatient diagnosis and procedure coding.
    • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and healthcare regulations.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to mentor and train staff in coding practices and compliance.
    • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
    • Proficiency with coding software, Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
