Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Fire Safety Compliance & Regulatory Adherence:

  • Ensure compliance with Factories Act, NFPA, PESO, Explosives Act, Petroleum Act, NBC, BIS, and local fire safety regulations.
  • Liaise with fire department, regulatory authorities, and auditors for fire safety compliance.
  • Maintain fire safety legal registers and ensure timely renewal of permits/licenses.
  • Conduct fire risk assessments and ensure compliance with OSHA, ISO 45001, and GMP fire safety guidelines.

2. Fire Prevention & Risk Assessment:

  • Conduct HAZOP, HIRA, JSA, and Fire Load Calculations to assess fire risks in API manufacturing.
  • Identify fire hazards related to flammable solvents, hazardous chemicals, and reactor operations.
  • Implement Process Safety Management (PSM) principles for fire and explosion risk control.
  • Ensure Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) compliance for hazardous chemicals.

3. Fire Safety Equipment & Infrastructure Management:

  • Ensure availability and functionality of fire detection, alarm, suppression, and hydrant systems.
  • Conduct regular inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of fire safety equipment.
  • Oversee installation and maintenance of firefighting systems (sprinklers, foam systems, gas suppression, hydrants, extinguishers, fire doors, emergency exits, and fire-rated enclosures).
  • Implement static electricity control measures and grounding/bonding systems.

4. Emergency Preparedness & Response:

  • Develop and implement the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for fire incidents.
  • Conduct fire drills, evacuation drills, and mutual aid coordination with local authorities.
  • Lead incident investigations for fire accidents, implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Train and manage the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Fire Wardens, and First Aiders.

5. Fire Safety Training & Awareness Programs:

  • Conduct fire safety induction, mock drills, fire extinguisher handling, and emergency response training.
  • Develop and implement Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) programs focused on fire risk reduction.
  • Train employees on flammable solvent handling, hot work safety, confined space entry, and static electricity prevention.

6. Fire & Safety Audits & Inspections:

  • Conduct internal fire safety audits, fire drills, and inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in external audits (ISO 45001, GMP, EHS Audits, Factory Inspectorate, PESO inspections).
  • Maintain records of fire incidents, near misses, audit findings, and safety improvements.

7. Incident Management & Emergency Preparedness:

  • Investigate workplace incidents, near-misses, and safety violations to determine root causes.
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Lead emergency preparedness drills (fire, chemical spill, explosion scenarios).
  • Coordinate with fire departments and disaster management teams for emergency response.

8. Process Safety & Operational Safety Management:

  • Implement and monitor safe handling procedures for hazardous chemicals and solvents.
  • Ensure proper functioning of safety equipment (firefighting systems, gas detectors, PPE).
  • Conduct workplace safety inspections, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • Develop SOPs for critical safety operations in API manufacturing.

9. Safety Culture & Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for safety performance.
  • Encourage reporting and learning from near-misses and unsafe conditions.
  • Organize safety campaigns, competitions, and recognition programs for safety compliance.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Experience:

  • 5-8 years of experience in safety management, preferably in API / chemical / pharmaceutical industries.
  • Hands-on experience in handling hazardous chemicals and solvent-based manufacturing processes.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, Factories Act, PESO, ISO 45001 regulations.
  • Experience in HAZOP, HIRA, JSA, PSSR, PHA, BBS, MOC, and CAPA implementation.
  • Proficiency in handling fire prevention systems and emergency response planning.
  • Familiarity with GMP, EHS Audits, and Process Safety Management (PSM).
