Role : OpenShift Engineer
Job Summary :
The L3 Support Engineer will be responsible for the management, maintenance, and troubleshooting of on-premises OpenShift clusters. You will ensure high availability, performance, and security of containerized workloads deployed on VMware and BareMetal servers. This role requires advanced troubleshooting skills and expertise in managing container orchestration infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities :
1. OpenShift Cluster Infrastructure Management :
- Install, configure, and manage Red Hat OpenShift clusters deployed on VMware and BareMetal servers.
- Perform regular cluster patching, upgrades, and scaling activities.
- Monitor and troubleshoot cluster health, nodes, and container workloads.
2. Incident and Problem Management :
- Serve as the L3 escalation point for all OpenShift infrastructure-related issues.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring or major incidents and implement permanent fixes.
- Troubleshoot issues related to networking, storage, and nodes in OpenShift clusters.
3. Monitoring and Performance Tuning :
- Implement monitoring using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or Red Hat monitoring solutions.
- Optimize cluster resource utilization, including CPU, memory, and storage.
- Monitor networking performance, ingress, and load balancing.
4. Backup, Disaster Recovery, and HA Management :
- Implement and manage backup and disaster recovery plans for OpenShift clusters.
- Ensure high availability of clusters and failover mechanisms for critical services.
5. Automation and Scripting :
- Automate routine tasks like node scaling, log rotation, and updates using Bash.
- Develop scripts for automated monitoring, reporting, and recovery workflows.
6. Storage and Networking Integration :
- Integrate and manage storage solutions for OpenShift workloads, such as Ceph, NFS, or external storage systems.
- Troubleshoot and configure network components, including ingress controllers, service mesh, and DNS.
7. Documentation and Collaboration :
- Maintain detailed documentation for OpenShift cluster configurations, troubleshooting guides, and SOPs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams like DevOps, Networking, and Infrastructure to support deployments and incident resolution.
- Train and guide L1/L2 support teams.
Technical Skills :
1. Red Hat OpenShift Expertise
- Advanced knowledge of OpenShift installation, administration, and lifecycle management on VMware and BareMetal.
- Experience with OpenShift Operators, storage classes, and custom resource definitions (CRDs).
2. Infrastructure Expertise :
- Hands-on experience managing clusters on VMware vSphere and BareMetal environments.
- Knowledge of server provisioning, networking, and virtualization concepts.
3. Container Orchestration and Networking :
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes, including pods, services, ingress controllers, and persistent volumes.
- Experience troubleshooting OpenShift SDN, load balancers, and service mesh solutions.
4. Scripting and Automation :
- Proficiency in Ansible, Bash, or Python for automation tasks.
- Experience writing playbooks for OpenShift maintenance and management.
5. Monitoring and Logging : Expertise with monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Zabbix.
6. Backup and HA Management : Experience with backup and recovery solutions for OpenShift clusters.
7. OpenShift Components Expertise :
- Manage and optimize OpenShift components such as Master Nodes, Worker Nodes, ETCD, and Cluster Operators.
- Troubleshoot issues related to OpenShift networking (SDN), Routes, Ingress Controllers, and Service Mesh.
- Deep understanding of CRDs (Custom Resource Definitions), Operators, and monitoring tools within OpenShift.
8. Access Management :
- Configure and manage RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) for OpenShift clusters.
- Provision and manage user access and group permissions in compliance with company policies.
- Troubleshoot authentication and authorization issues for cluster users.
Certifications (Preferred but not Mandatory) :
- Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration (EX280).
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA).
Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT or related field.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in managing Red Hat OpenShift clusters in on-premises environments.
- Strong knowledge of VMware vSphere and BareMetal server management.
