Job Description
This is an Indirect Tax Research Lead profile. We are looking for someone with expertise in researching tax law, reporting, and remittance requirements to keep our tax products in compliance with state, county, and local jurisdiction tax laws for use in Avalara Solutions.
You will analyse complex tax laws and guidelines, and understand changes. As a Tax Researcher, you will source, investigate, and analyse US State and locally administered tax rules, rates, forms, and metadata changes promptly to integrate those laws into Avalara products. You will be responsible to train and guide team in the day to day tasks. We offer a unique opportunity to join a productive indirect tax research team within a growing Software as a Service (SaaS) company. You will report to the Manager, Indirect Tax
Job Duties
- Expertise in researching tax law, reporting, and remittance requirements to ensure tax products comply with state, county, and local jurisdiction tax laws for use in Avalara Solutions.
- Analyze complex tax laws and guidelines, understanding legislative changes.
- Responsible for sourcing, investigating, and analyzing U.S. state and locally administered tax rules, rates, forms, and metadata changes to integrate them into Avalara products.
- Ensure content accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of content, for Sales and Use tax and Lodging Taxes.
- Understand and navigate Tax Authority portals.
- Collaborate with tax content research, product management, and engineering teams to implement solutions.
- Thoroughly document research findings and detail, providing comprehensive summaries and expansions upon request.
- Train team members on tax rules and assist the team with their queries.
- Train and guide the team in day-to-day tasks.
- Be open to additional responsibilities and occasionally adjust work schedules to overlap with U.S./UK timing for collaborative meetings or training.
- Lead automation and tax technology projects from creation to completion, including project planning, partner management, resource allocation, and risk mitigation.
- Effectively work and communicate with team members to accomplish tasks in a timely, efficient, and productive manner.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in U.S. Indirect tax function and familiarity with indirect tax returns and instructions.
- Masters in Finance, Masters in Business Administration, Degree in Law, Bachelor of Commerce, or any related field.
- Indirect tax / digital reporting research experience, including a logical to drilling down to specific data that is important to the accuracy of the published content.
- Legal research experience reviewing research, interpreting complex tax regulations, and developing tax technology solutions.
- Experience working with indirect tax technology solutions/ tax software implementations/ tax process improvement projects
