Interview Preparation Tips

Round: prelimnary process
Experience: They have a shortlist of around 15 people for interview based on CGPA.

Round: Interview
Experience: They want to see in the interview how well you can gel into the company, they have a very low attrition rate, this can be partly attributed to the careful selection. It seems from the results (taking guys in the CGPA range 5.5-7) that they want people who will not leave their company in any circumstance.
They asked me about my career plan, and told me about the career path in synergy. The company is mainly into planning, management and contracting.
There were questions on bearing capacity calculation from Standard Penetration Test, about estimating the load on a footing if there's a 2 storey building above (they provided me with a calculator for the same ).
Their main concern was what I wanted to do in my job, what were my plans. Because for them taking stable candidates is very important.
To be frank, I just have this feeling that they are mainly concerned with earning money and doing business, their concern is not so much on employee welfare and satisfaction, they feel money will be the only solution for job satisfaction.

General Tips: They initially declared the CTC to be 5.5 LPA, but they actually negotiated this in the interview, and if you have low CGPA, they will say in your face that you deserve less ! So they ultimately offered a B category job.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Call FOR interview
Experience: Based upon GATE 2015 score they called us for interview in Dehradun.
Interviews were started in June.

Gate score weightage is 60 %
Academic Qualification Weightage 20 % bachelor degree and 5 % higher education.
Interview 15 %
Total 100 %
Tips: They give full 20 % to all ( according to a RTI ) in Academic Qualification
Thus GATE Score is a major punch.
Also interview plays good role for those having average ranks.

Round: Other Interview
Experience: Interview comprises both of HR and Technical Questions.
I answered all questions very quickly, hence they were quite impressed.
I was the last candidate to be interviewed on that day.
I tried to bring happy moments while answering HR questions which made the last moments of my interview light and humurous.
Tips: Answer with confidence and keep a smile on your face.

General Tips: Already mentioned.
Skill Tips: Learn about company details.

Note: " u should have a provisional degree" or "undertaking by college officials mentioning ur passing along with final cgpa mentioned" as lot of candidates were not allowed to give interview without it.

Candidates belonging to Drilling were asked a few questions in current affairs.

Funny Moments: When they asked me about my strengths I took a little pause before answering so they were like "u r creating ur strengths"
So I replied " there are many strengths" I am thinking what to tell.
After my reply they all were filled with joy and the interview ended on a lighter and happy mode

I was interviewed in Aug 2016.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: ONGC being a PSU is hugely inclined towards GPA. This was a challenge for me since I was not endowed with an excellent GPA. However, I was selected according to my rank in my batch. In General category, I was ranked 6th with an overall GPA of 8.03. A figure of 8 and above does help, by the way.
N.B.- In General category, I was the last ranked student to get selected. Thanks to my technical background.

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: This was the major deciding factor apart from your GPA. ONGC strictly tested the technical knowledge of the students of Petroleum Engineering. Credit was given to the projects and internships undertaken.
The interview panel consisted of eminent personalities of the organisation from different departments of drilling, reservoir, production, HR etc, who have been working in the industry for an average of more than 25 years.
They also had a fixed set of questions, which I guess we're asked to every student who appeared for the interview.
Not only were technical skills tested, but also one's logical bent of mind.
What worked in favour of me was my sound technical knowledge, my choice of project and my research in bringing about innovations in different fields of the subject.
Post my interview, I was asked by one of the Directors to share my research material with him, which I realised was a positive feedback. Nevertheless, the next day I got notification? of my selection.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: We were asked to give answers to the questionnaire on Psychometry. The questions were of multiple choice type. There were no right or wrong answers actually. The purpose of the test was to judge our Psychometry and to see our personality traits (e.g., introvert/extrovert).
Tips: The test had no weightage on the overall selection process. It was just to get a sense of the personality traits of the aspirants.
Duration: 30 minutes
Total Questions: 25

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: I was interviewed for about 10 minutes. Except a couple of questions (Why do I want to join ONGC?, What is Prof. Abdul Kalam's dream for India?) I was asked about my subject (Geology) and oil field only.
Tips: Be confident but do not be over smart. People sitting on the interview board are legends in their fields and a hint of arrogance can jeopardize your chance of getting selected.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: prelimnary process
Experience: They have a shortlist of around 15 people for interview based on CGPA.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interview was a mix of HR and Tech.
So they asked me about my intern in detail, what I exactly did and what I learnt. Next they came to my B.Tech minor project, again they asked me some good questions on it after getting the details, since I had tried an approach ( i.e. using laplace equation for velocity potential) never used before for the problem (i.e, hydraulic downpull) they were quite impressed and asked if I will publish my project findings.
Tips: The company mainly requires people with a technical bent of mind, they will view you favorably if you have done well in your projects and intern, and if you have a paper published.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The paper consisted of 60 technical and 50 GK questions. Out of 60 we have to answer 50 in the technical section and in the GK section we are required to answer 40. The GK section was quite easy. Out of 50, I could easily answer 37. The technical section was bit tough. Most of the questions were direct and with no numerical application. Almost 30 questions were from Chemical Technology. After a month I got my result and I was declared shortlisted for the interview.
Total Questions: 110

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The first phase of the interview was the document verification and after that we were called for two interviews. One was for chemistry post and other one for production. My first interview was for chemistry. There were 5 members in the panel. They asked about laws of heat transfer with equations. They also asked questions regarding my final year project. Questions on fission and fusion process with reactions with proper application were asked. Further they asked me some GK questions and then I was sent to other room for interview on production. They asked HR questions like "Tell us about yourself". they asked questions about my family background and also some questions on India's facts and figures. Then they asked few questions on unit conversions. They inquired if I was willing to work anywhere in India.

  • Q1. How a Lease is terminated?
  • Ans.

A lease can be terminated through mutual agreement, expiration, breach, or eviction.

    • Mutual agreement: Both parties agree to end the lease before the agreed-upon term.

    • Expiration: The lease ends naturally after the agreed-upon term.

    • Breach: One party violates the terms of the lease, allowing the other party to terminate it.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: A lease is a contract and if in writing, would be governed by its terms and conditions. A lease gets terminated by flux of time. Otherwise the provisions of Section 106 of the Transfer of Property Act would apply. A lease for Industrial or agricultural purpose would be a lease from year to year and need six months notice while other type of leases would run from moth to month and can be terminated by fifteen days' notice. Their GM Law sitting on the panel probably was not aware about six moths' notice and he immediately summoned for the bare Act. On finding the answer correct he gave me a standing ovation and told me there and then that I was selected and I would receive my appointment letter. I did get the letter but did not join as by that time I had got selected for the post of Manager Law in Bank of Baroda and being from the banking stream then working for Dena Bank I opted to continue in the Banking sector.
