Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: They have a shortlist of everyone above CGPA 6 for interview.

Round: Interview
Tips: Say a straight yes to Q 6 if you want the job

General Tips: Don't be dazzled by the high initial salary as the increment is frustratingly less. The work of civil engg, is mostly estimation, contracting and execution on site. They do have a design office in Mumbai, but they will post as per their requirement after training. The work culture and environment at ONGC is not very conducive if you are ambitious and hardworking. The good thing is job security, good and slowly increasing income, medical and other benefits, relaxed leave rules, cheap home loans etc.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: prelimnary process
Experience: They have a shortlist of around 15 people for interview based on CGPA.

Round: Interview
Experience: They want to see in the interview how well you can gel into the company, they have a very low attrition rate, this can be partly attributed to the careful selection. It seems from the results (taking guys in the CGPA range 5.5-7) that they want people who will not leave their company in any circumstance.
They asked me about my career plan, and told me about the career path in synergy. The company is mainly into planning, management and contracting.
There were questions on bearing capacity calculation from Standard Penetration Test, about estimating the load on a footing if there's a 2 storey building above (they provided me with a calculator for the same ).
Their main concern was what I wanted to do in my job, what were my plans. Because for them taking stable candidates is very important.
To be frank, I just have this feeling that they are mainly concerned with earning money and doing business, their concern is not so much on employee welfare and satisfaction, they feel money will be the only solution for job satisfaction.

General Tips: They initially declared the CTC to be 5.5 LPA, but they actually negotiated this in the interview, and if you have low CGPA, they will say in your face that you deserve less ! So they ultimately offered a B category job.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: prelimnary process
Experience: They have a shortlist of around 15 people for interview based on CGPA.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interview was a mix of HR and Tech.
So they asked me about my intern in detail, what I exactly did and what I learnt. Next they came to my B.Tech minor project, again they asked me some good questions on it after getting the details, since I had tried an approach ( i.e. using laplace equation for velocity potential) never used before for the problem (i.e, hydraulic downpull) they were quite impressed and asked if I will publish my project findings.
Tips: The company mainly requires people with a technical bent of mind, they will view you favorably if you have done well in your projects and intern, and if you have a paper published.
