• The series is increasing by 4, 6, 8, 10, ...

• Each number is the sum of the previous number and the next odd number.

• 2 + 4 = 6, 6 + 6 = 12, 12 + 8 = 20, 20 + 10 = 30, so the next number is 30 + 12 = 42.
