Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - I had during an interview at Concept PR, Bangalore, for the position of Account Executive. The interview was conducted by a senior leader, formerly associated with Tata, who currently holds a top-level management position heading operations in the South.

During the conversation, I was asked a hypothetical yet oddly personal question: "You have spent most of your life in Chennai and have now moved to Bangalore. Why haven’t you explored the rest of the country? Why should only I, as someone from the North, explore other regions?" While the question might have been intended to gauge adaptability or curiosity, the tone came across as dismissive, and it felt unnecessarily loaded with personal assumptions.

The question seemed to overlook the fact that career choices and relocations are often driven by circumstances, opportunities, and personal preferences rather than a lack of curiosity. As someone actively seeking growth in my career, moving to Bangalore was already a step toward exploring new opportunities.

While the interviewer’s impressive background and professional achievements were evident, his approach during this particular moment reflected an attitude that felt more judgmental than constructive. A better framing of the question could have encouraged a thoughtful discussion about adaptability or openness to new experiences, which are relevant to a role in public relations.

This experience left me feeling that professionalism and empathy in interviews go a long way in creating a positive environment for candidates to showcase their abilities. It’s important for leaders, irrespective of their background, to foster conversations that are constructive and insightful rather than making candidates feel defensive.
