I am deeply disheartened by my experience with L&T Constructions in Manapakkam, particularly in the Indirect Tax Department. There is a glaring issue of community domination that significantly affects career progression and employee welfare. Firstly, the disparity between contract and on-role employees is stark. If you belong to a specific community, you are more likely to be selected as an on-role employee, enjoying all the benefits that come with it. Conversely, those from other communities are often confined to contract roles, with promotions being extremely rare and entirely at the discretion of biased decision-makers. I know of someone who has been working as a contract employee for the past ten years, without any significant benefits or prospects for advancement. Contract employees are not provided with medical insurance, yet they are expected to undertake official work outside the office without any assurance of their safety. The leave policy is also inadequate, with only 24 leaves (12 CL and 12 ML) in a year. The office hours are officially from 9:30 AM to 6:00 or 6:15 PM, but contract employees are often forced to stay longer. Leaving at the scheduled time is frowned upon and can lead to being cornered by managers. Moreover, most on-role employees tend to extend their work tenure for an additional 1 or 2 years, primarily because they belong to the dominant community. This practice raises a critical question: can these older employees deliver the same output as younger employees? This unfair favoritism stifles the potential of capable, younger employees from diverse backgrounds.
