Career Growth

Your growth is your responsibility. Not your manager’s
For the longest time, I believed that if I just kept my head down and did good work, growth would follow. Promotions. Opportunities. Recognition. All in due time, right?
Turns out, not really. No one’s handing it to you just because you’re consistent. You have to ask. Follow up. Sometimes even fight for what you’ve earned.
Be your own advocate. Keep track of your wins. Speak up when you're ready for more. It’s uncomfortable, but silence rarely gets rewarded.
Anyone else learned this the hard way?

How do you document everything? If my boss comes up and asks me to do overtime because of company requirements or something, how can I document something like that which happened irl not over teams?

[an operations intern](username) If it’s not on Teams, I just send a quick follow-up message, “As discussed, I’ll stay back for XYZ.” Helps build a record. And yeah, I also note stuff down for myself. Memory fades, proof doesn’t.

Oof this is me rn 😭😭 Just curious...how do you bring up promotion talks without sounding too demanding?

[an analyst](username) Start documenting everything, wins, asks, feedback. Bring it up again with specifics. If they still dodge? Speak up again.

You need to observe and analyze in your organization on what basis people are getting promoted. From what you have said so far it could be either of 2 things. Either you do exceptionally so well that your manager perceives you as a threat in terms of having the capability to outgrow him and he wants to ensure that it doesn’t happen. Or the second thing, your manager is the typical bootlicker and he expects you to worship him. If you really think that you’re in the right place doing the right things in the eyes of your manager if you have any 1 On 1 sync on a weekly or biweekly basis. Let him know that you have lost interest in working in your organization. See his reaction and what does he say to you. If he says that why do you think that way or he reassures you that he will do something about it then you’re being treated like an expendable person. In that case leave the organization and if he says I can’t do anything for you if you feel like leaving leave then leave the organization as fast as you can. Don’t waste your efforts and time for an organization that doesn’t value you.

[iamtheonlyone](username) It’s scary how common this is. Some managers feel threatened by capable folks, others just want yes-men around. Either way, if you speak up and they still don’t care, it’s not your growth that’s the problem, it’s the environment. Better to walk than wait.

Absolutely correct, Stay till you are valued, Focus on skills, it will give you more opportunities not bootlicking your managers

@therock94 Absolutely! Skills > sycophancy any day. Stay, learn, grow but the moment you're just being used, not valued, it’s time to move on. Loyalty should never come at the cost of self-respect.

Always have a BATNA. You can leave to another company if you don't get it.

[sololeveller1111](username) Exactly. Always know your BATNA. Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement. If your current place won’t give you what you deserve, you should already have your plan B ready. Loyalty is great, but not at the cost of stagnation.

but what if the manager straight up ignores your asks? Any tips for that awkward convo?

[tayaji](username) Totally get that. If they ignore you, start documenting everything, wins, asks, feedback.
Bring it up again with specifics. If they still dodge? That silence is your answer.

Exactly my story. I have been working my best and I do get recognised for my work but no promotion or monetary gains. I asked and requested. They heard but just heard

[cryptical](username) Felt that. Recognition without rewards starts to feel hollow after a point. You spoke up, they listened but did nothing. That’s not appreciation, that’s exploitation wrapped in compliments. Time to take that talent where it’s truly valued.
