What do you want from a Manager?

We all have examples of bosses we didn’t mesh well with. Ideally, in a professional environment, what would you like from your manager? What has made you like working for someone in the past? What did someone do that made you say I would follow them to another company just to keep working for them? Clear goals? Clear priorities? Weekly one on ones? Help solving problems? Help working between departments? Help

My favorite boss ever was very kind and thanked me every day for being there. She was patient, encouraging and inspired me to do good work. I never felt weird about asking or telling her anything. In our department she took the blame for mistakes but she always gave away the credit for good work to the team. Even though the pay at that job was very low, I found it so hard to leave her. She was the best.

I have a great manager right now. I'd follow him into battle any day because he: Leads by example. Hes a pro and makes you want to work hard to get to his level of expertise and career accomplishments Treats people well with respect, clients and co workers alike. He's the kind of person I want to be more like even in my personal life Builds people up not knock them down. I've had managers who would belittle me for a mistake instead of make it a building and learning moment. Its very easy to tell who cares about your growth and who just wants to release their frustrations on you like a stress ball. Has our back. He'd defend us in situations where its right to do so. It fosters a healthy work culture and not an environment where everyone throws each other under the bus to get ahead

I’ve had 3 amazing managers in my career, 1 of which I’m still in contact with and our professional relationship ended 13 years ago. The thing they all had in common is that they didn’t micromanage me and acted more like mentors- offering guidance, presenting opportunities for professional development, etc. they stepped in and corrected if necessary, but they all made me feel like what they wanted most was to see me succeed and grow as a professional

Someone who actually listens and acts accordingly based on the recommendations of someone who's been doing the job. Only had 1 manager actually listen like that.

Within our team: clear goals and get out of the way. At this point, while I certainly have room to learn, I know how to do my core job function. I'm in a support role and I know this, I think this works best when I know who I'm supporting and we work it out from there. Outside the team: go forth and get fixes or at least guidance for screwed up processes. Things can get pretty wrapped around the axle as the larger company gets involved.

Usually employees in a team expect appreciation for the work, opinions to be heard, opportunities to develope their skill & shine in the crowed rather taking the credit, most important autonomy to performance rather dependency for each & every tasks.
