Transitioning from Design to Product Management—Seeking Advice and Guidance
Hi everyone,
I’ve worked as an architect for 2 years, then a year as a furniture designer, and now as a product designer developing new products. Lately, I’ve been considering a career shift into product management and would appreciate advice on making this transition.
Specifically:
1. What skills are essential for moving from design to product management? What gaps should I focus on given my lack of experience with engineers, coding, and IT?
2. What’s the best approach to transition—should I focus on hands-on learning, shadowing PMs, or something else?
3. Any recommended courses, certifications, or resources (books, webinars) for someone with a design background to build a solid foundation in product management?
4. What strong advice would you give to someone aiming to excel in this role with a design-focused background?
Thanks for your insights!

To make the transition smooth, focus on building your technical skills, like understanding market trends and project management. Network with other product managers, think strategically about products and keep learning about the latest industry stuff.

To look at it one way, Product is a product, so the fundamentals and concepts for product, design, customer centricity and markets mostly remain same, Again there are some differences like what shapes IT product needs and human interaction is different and also the way it’s built and used, and the business model may be. Good to get an understanding n perspective of these and how these products are designed and built.
One easy way is read concise and easy to understand articles from Medium on software product management.

Do you have any tips on how to approach her without making things awkward?
