Not all managers are toxic!

I’m having a tough time with one of my reportee. He is not meeting the deadlines and it’s starting to affect the overall performance of the team. I’ve tried to be understanding, but it’s getting to the point where it’s unfair to others. I don’t want to be harsh, but I need to address the issue. Do you have any advice on how to talk to him about it without sounding too critical?

Is anything making it difficult for you to meet these deadlines?

Clearly communicate the expected deadlines and consequences of not meeting them.

You need to be harsh and critical once so that your reportees understand the importance of the work they do. Sometimes, negative feedback helps to uplift the performance.

It's great that you want to approach this sensitively! Try using 'I' statements to express how his actions affect the team. Focus on solutions together!

I'd suggest finding the reason for your reportee not meeting deadlines. It's easy to jump to conclusions like they're slacking off, etc. But something might be bothering them overall. Try and help them, if it still doesn't work let them take time off work. If it still doesn't work have conversation with them about their role.

You may bring this into leaders notice. Sometime we as manager become too lineant and reportess take disadvantage of same. if you have tried everything, take support from next level manager

Schedule a meeting. Tell him this is your performance from last xyz months. We are getting delayed release because of this. Whole team is getting affected. Is there any issue which hampers your work? What do you have in mind? You can share it with me. I might be able to help in any way possible

Tell him that it's impacting teams productivity and ask him if he is facing any issues in his personal life so that at least you will be able to help him out in a positive way. I hope it helps 🙂
