I have 6 backlogs in my engineering (ECE branch) and I'm currently in my third year, preparing for the GATE exam in 2026.
I feel demotivated because if I’m struggling to clear my semester exams, how will I manage to clear GATE? Despite these challenges, I’m trying to study, but I find it difficult to understand the concepts since my basics are weak. My backlogs are in Engineering Mathematics 1, 2, 3 and Electronic Devices. I know GATE is tough, and it’s overwhelming to juggle semester exams along with GATE prep, especially with these backlogs. If anyone has been in a similar situation and successfully overcame it, I would appreciate any guidance on how to strengthen my basics and improve my preparation strategy.

I had 11 Backlogs when I was in 4 2 and had to write 11 + 3 regular 14 papers. I cleared all of them in one sitting (2013 passout), went to Australia for my masters, came back did an MBA after scoring 90 percentile in MAT and landed a placement job with the first company that came to the Institute, with Decent package. Now I am working as an associate manager. Please don't give up. Yes times can be demotivating but be consistent in your work. Avoid unnecessary friendship and habits. Follow habit stacking to improve mind and physical health. Do at least 1 physical activity everyday. Avoid watching P. Set a small mental, physical and academic goal, once achieved keep on increasing. Also, I ended up winning National champion Bronze for Martial arts in 2017 when I was 26 years old with just 4 5 months of practice.

IMHO, first clear all backlogs. Might lose a year but have a clean slate whe you reach final year. Then, with a fresh mind, you can approach GATE OR GMAT. For backlogs, you can go to tuitions or have some extra classes with the same lecturer where you clarify the point you fail to understand and upgrade that. Good luck

I believe in you, you'll be able to clear all your backlogs. Firstly you must focus on your basics, for maths there is a youtube channel named "Rkdemy" make sure to check it out. Once done clearing your backlogs with a fresh mind prepare for GATE. I hope this helps you a bit.

I tried to talk with the HR of my current company. HR is ready to give the "buy out" option and I am also ok with it.
