Jindal Power Limited (JPL), a subsidiary of Jindal Steel & Power Limited, is a leading power company in India across the energy spectrum: thermal, hydro and renewable. JPL has been contributing significantly to the growing needs of power in the country and its installed capacity is 3400 MW.
JPL commissioned the first unit of its 4x250 MW thermal power plant in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh in 2007, becoming the first private player in the country to set up an Independent Power Plant (IPP). Since then, this flagship has operated as a fully integrated power plant at an industry-leading Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 93% (average for last seven years).
Since its inception, a 6.9 km long cross-country conveyor belt (the second longest in Asia), was installed to feed coal to the plant. Among the other integrated facilities built by JPL are a dam to feed water to the plant and a 258-km long 400-KV double circuit transmission line to pump the power into the National Grid.
Buoyed by the success of its 4x250 MW plant, JPL has further expanded its presence in Tamnar with a 2,400 MW (4X600 MW) thermal power plant. With the completion of the mega expansion project, the Groups installed capacity now stands at 37.6 Billion Units of Electricity annually, i.e. 3.58% of India’s Electricity Generation in 2014-15. The completion of 2400 MW expansion project has taken Jindal Power Limited’s (JPL) installed capacity to 3400 MW, thereby making it one of the largest private power producer in the State of Chhattisgarh. JPL has emerged as a best performer in Ministry of Power and Central Electricity Authority project execution excellence study and won two National Awards- Gold Shield and Silver Shield for early completion of Thermal Power Projects. The 2400 MW super thermal power project was completed in a record time.
To optimize its operation, the company has adopted leading edge technologies, efficiency processes and world best practices in project execution and management, thereby setting new benchmarks in India’s power sector. JPL has consistently topped the Central Electricity Authority’s highest plant load factor list among the major thermal power plants (above 200 MW capacities) in India.

NASA’s SPHEREx Takes First Images, Preps to Study Millions of Galaxies
- NASA's SPHEREx, designed to map millions of galaxies, has captured its first images that show the observatory is functioning as expected.
- Although the images are uncalibrated, they offer a glimpse of SPHEREx's wide view of the sky, with each bright spot representing a source of light like a star or galaxy.
- Each exposure from SPHEREx contains six images, showcasing a field of view 20 times wider than a full Moon.
- The observatory, focusing on infrared light, has detectors with 17 unique wavelength bands in each of its six detectors.
- SPHEREx will conduct an all-sky survey four times during its two-year mission, collecting light from stars and galaxies using spectroscopy in multiple wavelengths.
- The telescope’s data will aid in understanding topics from the universe's early physics to the origins of water in our galaxy.
- After successful checks, SPHEREx's detectors have cooled down to their necessary temperature of around minus 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- SPHEREx's ability to capture faint, distant galaxies has been demonstrated in the initial images, heralded as a significant achievement by the project team.
- The mission is managed by JPL, with BAE Systems building the telescope and spacecraft, and Caltech leading the science integration and management.
- SPHEREx's dataset will be made available to the public via the NASA-IPAC Infrared Science Archive for further research and exploration.

6 Things to Know About NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer
- NASA's Lunar Trailblazer mission aims to map the Moon to identify the presence, form, and changes in water over time.
- Expected to launch by Feb. 26, the small satellite will focus on resolving the mystery of the Moon's water.
- The mission will create high-resolution water maps on the lunar surface using advanced science instruments.
- Lunar Trailblazer will employ the High-resolution Volatiles and Minerals Moon Mapper (HVM3) and Lunar Thermal Mapper (LTM) instruments.
- The spacecraft will follow a strategic trajectory utilizing the gravity of the Sun, Earth, and Moon for efficient travel.
- It will investigate the Moon's South Pole craters, which could potentially contain frozen water resources.
- As a cost-effective and high-risk mission, Lunar Trailblazer was selected under NASA's SIMPLEx program.
- The data from this mission will benefit future human and robotic lunar exploration endeavors.
- Led by Bethany Ehlmann, the mission involves key contributions from Caltech, JPL, Lockheed Martin Space, and UK Space Agency.

The chances of this asteroid hitting Earth keep rising. But there are four reasons I’m not worried yet | Carrie Nugent
- A new rocky object known as 2024 YR4 was discovered in Earth's astronomical neighborhood, with a chance of hitting Earth in 2032.
- The impact probability by Nasa JPL has increased to 3.1%, raising concerns about a potential impact.
- Reasons for not panicking yet include the time to prepare, the asteroid's size relative to past impacts, and the predominantly water-covered Earth surface.
- Ongoing data collection and trajectory predictions are crucial in assessing the potential impact of 2024 YR4, with the impact probability subject to change as more information is gathered.
- Efforts by astronomers, software engineers, and civil servants are focusing on monitoring near-Earth objects like 2024 YR4 to mitigate potential risks.
- The asteroid Dart mission demonstrated the ability to alter an asteroid's orbit, offering hope for redirecting objects on a collision course with Earth.
- Continuous surveillance of near-Earth objects by observatories like Atlas and collaborations with international agencies are key to tracking and assessing potential threats.
- While 2024 YR4 requires further observation to determine its trajectory and size accurately, it serves as a reminder of the potential risks posed by larger asteroids.
- Ongoing efforts in asteroid detection and monitoring play a vital role in safeguarding against potential asteroid impacts, despite the uncertainties surrounding specific objects.
- Astronomers and space agencies remain vigilant in tracking and analyzing near-Earth objects to ensure preparedness and mitigation strategies for potential impact events.

NASA’s SPHEREx Space Telescope Will Seek Life’s Ingredients
- NASA's SPHEREx mission aims to survey the Milky Way galaxy to search for water ice and other crucial ingredients for life by focusing on molecular clouds in space.
- Scheduled for launch on February 27, SPHEREx will search for water, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide frozen on interstellar dust grains in gas and dust clouds.
- The mission will explore how water, a vital component for life, forms and resides in the universe within these icy reservoirs on dust grains.
- Using 3D data gathering along its line of sight, SPHEREx aims to understand the abundance and formation of frozen compounds in molecular clouds.
- The mission will provide insights into ice formation depths, changes in abundance based on cloud density, and alterations post-star formation.
- SPHEREx will complement targeted telescopes like Webb, offering a large-scale survey while allowing detailed follow-up observations on intriguing findings.
- The mission's findings could shed light on planet and star composition influenced by molecular cloud origins and the formation of water in cosmic environments.
- NASA's SPHEREx is a collaboration managed by JPL, designed for swift sky surveys, with data analysis involving institutions in the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan.
- With SPHEREx's dataset set to be publicly available, the mission aims to enhance understanding of frozen compounds in the galaxy and their formation processes.
- The mission underscores the significance of water presence in the universe as a key element for exploring the possibilities of life beyond Earth.
