Portfolio management: Developing and implementing the business strategy for our portfolio of journals. This includes the strategic review and development of the existing portfolio as well as developing a future strategy along the overall strategy that may include journal launches and acquisition plans.
Journal development: Manage and grow a key publishing program (open access) by defining journal development plans aligned with our Thieme Science strategy. Setting and adjusting quality and scope of the journals strategically in line with market development.
Team lead: Demonstrating skills in team management: such as communication, people development, managing change, time management and conflict resolution.
Quality and improvement: Continuous quality management and improvement on journal level regarding decisions on resources and service standards. Maintain publishing quality, ethics and standards including but not limited to research integrity and publishing policies.
Performance management: Ensure that KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed. Take a data led approach to portfolio management and development in line with the Thieme Science and Thieme India strategic objectives.
Networking, research community: Developing and expanding a network in our target groups. Building and developing close working relationships with our research communities, like editorial boards, advisory boards and societies. Understanding the trends and changes in communities you serve and adjust your portfolio strategy accordingly. Collaboration : close and coordinated collaboration with colleagues within the international Thieme Science Unit located in Stuttgart, London, New York, Rio de Janeiro and S o Paulo, New Delhi, and Beijing as well as with colleagues in Production, Marketing, Institutional Sales etc.
Required Background skills:
PhD or master s degree preferably in life sciences or medicine
Minimum 5 years of experience in the international academic publishing industry
A minimum of 3 years of proven operational leadership and project management experience
3 years plus proven experience managing an international portfolio of scientific journals, including networking with societies and other players.
Proven record-creating, implementing, and improving journal development plans and journal-level business strategies.
Experience in managing journal portfolios and in transitioning journals into open access.
Very good knowledge of all aspects of publishing ethics, editorial policy, procedures, and practice
Strategic thinking and analytical skills plus an entrepreneurial mindset
Outstanding communication skills with stakeholders at all levels in written and spoken English, knowledge of German language would be a bonus.
Excellent negotiation and influential skills
Strongly collaborative team worker, comfortable with co-ownership of shared goals and with a high level of personal accountability
Able to undertake national and international travel for conference attendance, site visits, and meetings
Business experience in an international environment is desirable.
