Technical Architect Apigee Hybrid & Microservices on Anthos (Infra & Platform Focus)

Role Summary

The Technical Architect will be responsible for the infrastructure design, deployment, and operations of Apigee Hybrid on Anthos and microservices on Anthos. This role includes capacity planning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimization to ensure scalability, reliability, and security. The individual will also lead problem identification and resolution, working closely with operations, security, and application teams.

Roles & Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Platform Design and Build

• Architect and implement Apigee Hybrid on Anthos (on-prem, hybrid, or cloud-native GKE).
• Design and build highly available Kubernetes clusters for API Gateway & microservices workloads.
• Define best practices for Anthos Service Mesh (ASM) & Istio to ensure secure service-to-service communication.
• Establish networking, firewall rules, ingress/egress policies, and load balancing for APIs and microservices.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using GitOps (ArgoCD, Terraform, Helm, Cloud Build, etc.) for platform automation.
• Ensure API gateways, service mesh, and Kubernetes nodes are optimized for latency, throughput, and resilience.

Capacity Planning & Performance Optimization

• Perform capacity planning for Apigee, Kubernetes, and underlying Anthos workloads based on API traffic and microservices usage.
• Conduct scalability assessments and resource optimization for efficient cluster utilization.
• Implement autoscaling policies (HPA/VPA) and cluster resource allocation strategies to manage workloads dynamically.
• Optimize Kubernetes networking (CNI, DNS, Istio routing, ingress controllers) for high availability and efficiency.
• Evaluate API traffic patterns and optimize caching, rate limiting, and quota policies.
• Work with security teams to enforce API security posture through OAuth2, JWT, mTLS, and IAM.

Monitoring, Problem Identification & Resolution

• Set up centralized monitoring for Apigee Hybrid and Anthos using Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, Google Cloud Operations Suite (formerly Stackdriver), and OpenTelemetry.
• Implement Dynatrace AIOps-driven monitoring for real-time anomaly detection, root cause analysis (RCA), and proactive issue resolution.
• Configure synthetic monitoring, real user monitoring (RUM), and distributed tracing using Dynatrace to detect performance bottlenecks.
• Define custom dashboards and alerts in Dynatrace, Prometheus, and Grafana for API, microservices, and Kubernetes performance metrics.
• Implement logging and tracing for API requests, microservices interactions, and Anthos workloads using Dynatrace, Cloud Logging, Fluentd, and Jaeger.
• Define and enforce SLAs, SLOs, and error budgets for API and microservices performance.
• Develop alerting mechanisms for real-time issue detection in API failures, latency spikes, traffic anomalies, and infrastructure health.
• Drive incident management and root cause analysis (RCA) for Apigee Hybrid and microservices failures.
• Ensure disaster recovery and failover strategies are in place for business continuity.

Ongoing Support & Governance

• Lead day-to-day operational support for Apigee Hybrid and Anthos environments.
• Automate infrastructure provisioning, policy enforcement, and compliance checks.
• Manage patching, upgrades, and versioning strategies for Kubernetes, Anthos, and Apigee components.
• Work closely with security and governance teams to harden API and Kubernetes security postures.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, Security, App Development, and Cloud Engineers) to ensure seamless API and microservices operations.

Preferred Qualifications

• 7+ years relevant experience in managing cloud-native API gateways, Kubernetes infrastructure, and microservices platforms.
• Deep expertise in Apigee Hybrid, Anthos, GKE, and Istio Service Mesh.
• Hands-on experience with Dynatrace for AI-powered monitoring, AIOps, and anomaly detection.
• Experience with large-scale Kubernetes clusters and multi-cloud hybrid architectures.
• Strong understanding of DevSecOps principles, security hardening, and compliance frameworks.
• Ability to optimize cost, performance, and reliability for enterprise-scale deployments.
• Solid understanding of incident management, SRE best practices, and RCA frameworks.
