Job Description: Geography Teacher (A-Level/IGCSE - Cambridge Curriculum)

Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Geography Teacher to join our academic team. The successful candidate will teach Geography at both IGCSE and A-Level (Cambridge Curriculum) to students aged 16-18, helping them develop a strong understanding of the worlds physical and human environments. The role involves delivering engaging lessons that stimulate students' curiosity about the natural world and global issues while helping them achieve their academic potential.

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Teaching

  • Teach Geography at IGCSE and A-Level, delivering stimulating, well-structured lessons that inspire students to explore geographical concepts and develop critical thinking.
  • Plan and deliver lessons in accordance with the school’s curriculum, adapting content and teaching methods to meet the needs of all students, including those with SEND, EAL, and those who are ‘more able’.
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage with real-world geographical issues, enhancing their understanding of the physical environment and the impact of human activities on the planet.
  • Set high expectations for student performance, behavior, and engagement, creating a positive classroom environment that encourages independent learning and inquiry.
  • Use a variety of teaching methods, including fieldwork, case studies, ICT, and group work, to support students’ geographical learning.
  • Continuously assess student progress through regular assignments, projects, and exams, providing constructive feedback that supports reflection and improvement.

Assessment & Reporting

  • Take responsibility for the attainment and progress of students, ensuring they meet the learning objectives set for their courses.
  • Mark and assess students’ work regularly in line with the school’s marking policy, offering feedback that encourages further development.
  • Write academic reports according to the school’s schedule, providing detailed feedback on students' progress and areas for improvement.
  • Attend Parent-Teacher meetings and communicate effectively with parents about their child’s academic progress.
  • Use assessment data to inform future lesson planning, ensuring that lessons are differentiated to support students at all levels.

Wider Professional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of the Geography Department by sharing best practices, resources, and ideas with colleagues.
  • Assist with extra-curricular activities such as field trips, geography clubs, and after-school revision sessions as directed by the Head of Department.
  • Provide cover for colleagues within the department and across the school as needed.
  • Engage in staff development opportunities, including induction, performance management, and appraisal processes.
  • Support the development of super-curricular activities, including student-led projects, geography competitions, and school outreach programs.

Pastoral and Co-Curricular

  • Actively contribute to the pastoral life of the school, supporting students' personal growth and well-being.
  • Act as a Personal Tutor for a group of students, providing guidance and support to help them achieve their academic and personal goals.
  • Participate in the school’s co-curricular activities, including geography-related clubs, field trips, and educational initiatives.
  • Promote the development of positive values such as responsibility, respect for the environment, and global citizenship.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

  • A good honours degree in Geography or a closely related subject (applications from final-year university students are welcome).
  • Proven experience teaching Geography at IGCSE and/or A-Level within the Cambridge curriculum.
  • A teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent) is desirable but not essential.
  • A passion for geography and a commitment to fostering students’ understanding of the world.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong subject knowledge in both physical and human geography, with the ability to teach a wide range of topics.
  • The ability to design and deliver engaging, well-structured lessons that challenge and inspire students.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of teaching methods and resources, including fieldwork, case studies, GIS (Geographical Information Systems), and ICT, to enhance student learning.
  • Strong assessment and feedback skills, with the ability to provide clear and constructive guidance that helps students improve their understanding.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage coursework, fieldwork, and assessments effectively.
