About the Project

Since more than a decade, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has invested in building capacities of State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLM) and DAY-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) to layer health and nutrition interventions in the Self-Help Group (SHG) platforms, with the aim to improve health outcomes. The proof of concept of this model was tried in 2012, with Parivartan project, as a part of the Ananya program in Bihar. Effectiveness of the concept was established through the first phase of the JEEViKA Technical Support (JTSP), wherein HN interventions were rolled out among 170,000 SHGs across 101 blocks of the state of Bihar and positively impacted health and nutrition indicators among mothers and children. Evidence generated through JTSP led to adoption and scale-up of the model through the DAY-NRLM and several SRLMs across the country. Throughout this period, PCI provided technical support to JEEVIKA, and subsequently to DAY-NRLM.

The current grant titled Transitioning HN integration with SHG platform in UP and National aims to undertake systemic interventions towards ensuring that the model of layering health and nutrition interventions in SHG platforms becomes a government-led and government-owned complementary model of HN interventions driven by community cadres of SRLMs along with frontline workers of the Health Department at national level and within the state of Uttar Pradesh. The project also aims to gather and share the learnings gathered through this work with a global audience to raise visibility of the model and facilitate adoption of the model in other geographies.

With the objective of creating a world-class footprint of the learnings of the work done under PTSP and at National level, and its key achievement, the project shall document and disseminate the learnings. The focus would be on ensuring greater visibility and expanding the scope through replication of the generalizable yet customized solutions across geography.
