Role & responsibilities

A Highway Operation Unit (HOU) is responsible for the smooth and safe operation of highways, including:

• Traffic managementMonitoring traffic conditions to prevent congestion and ensure a seamless driving experience
• Incident responseMinimizing disruption to traffic in the event of accidents or other incidents
• MaintenanceUndertaking routine and major maintenance, including repairs to potholes, cracks, joints, drains, embankments, structures, pavement markings, lighting, road signs, and other traffic control devices
• CommunicationOperating and maintaining all communication, control, and administrative systems
• Environmental protectionProtecting the environment and providing equipment and materials for this purpose
• Unauthorized usePreventing unauthorized use of the highway with the assistance of concerned law enforcement agencies
• EncroachmentsPreventing encroachments on the highway with the assistance of concerned law enforcement agencies
• RatingDeveloping IT solutions to rate the highways across defined parameters

HOU officers use IT-enabled systems and proactive monitoring to carry out their duties. They report to the HOU of PIU/RO and submit a daily report.
