Senior Data Engineer

We, at Jet2 (UK’s third largest airlines and the second largest tour operator), have set up a state-of-the-art Technology and Innovation Centre in Pune, India.  We are rapidly growing and are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering Team at Pune.

As a part of J2TT, the successful candidate will work alongside the experienced Data Engineering teams spread across Leeds and Sheffield offices in the UK.  Our Data Engineering teams are dynamic, with the project approach being Agile in nature. The Data sets and databases that are being developed (in Microsoft SQL Server Tech stack )and utilised are mission critical to many of the teams in Jet2.com & Jet2Holidays.com and define how we utilise customer centric data to enhance the customer experience and help to provide further revenue for the business. The data platforms allow our colleagues to understand the trends in customer interaction. The Senior Data Engineer will work both alone and within a team to tight deadlines and will be supported by the team on an ongoing basis. This is a key role within our team as the Senior Data Engineer represents the team in absence of the Lead Data Engineer.

Experience and Knowledge

• 5+ years of hands-on experience working in a data engineering or SQL Server development role.

• Hands-on experience in managing enterprise data warehouses and building data pipelines with SQL Server Tech Stack
• Good understanding of the ETL development lifecycle along with a strong development and maintenance track record
• Understand how data within the core business systems relates to business activity and constant improvement of business performance
• Work with key stakeholders to understand business requirements from a data collation point of view, including all technical requirements to be input into the systems
• Rich experience of working with regions such as US, UK, Europe or Australia
• Understand the mappings of source systems to data models in the target data warehouse schema and analytical cubes
• Liaise with the BAs, developers, testers to fix defects
• Previous experience of navigating defect tracking tools
• Solid experience of working within an Agile framework

Skills and Behaviors Required

We are looking for technologists who are passionate about data, ETL and analytics.

• 5-10 years of strong relevant development experience on SQL Server Stack with proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and above), including:
  • T-SQL: Ability to write complex queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
  • SSIS: Experience in developing and managing ETL processes.
  • SSRS: Expertise in creating complex reports and dashboards.
  • SSAS: Proficiency in OLAP cubes (multidimensional and Tabular) and multidimensional data modelling.
  • Knowledge of working with SQL Server Tech Stack by using clients like SSMS, Data Studio etc

• Excellent team player who acts as a key senior technical member of the team

• Skills in solution definition and design that enable low-level solution to implement

• Any experience of the following tools and technologies would be beneficial but not essential as you will have the opportunity to develop skills in some of these areas as part of this role:

• • Cloud Platforms (Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure and AWS)
  • Snowflake Cloud Data Warehouse
• Ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment.

The successful candidate will be in a very hands-on role, in all or any of below responsibility areas

Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) Feature Development and Maintenance:

• Manage and optimize the performance of the SQL Server platform, ensuring high availability, data integrity, and security.
• Develop and maintain T-SQL scripts, stored procedures, functions, and other database objects to support business requirements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database-related performance issues, bottlenecks, and query optimization.

ETL Development and Management:

• Design, develop, and maintain SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) packages to handle data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) from various data sources.
• Implement best practices for ETL processes, ensuring efficient data movement and transformation.
• Automate data workflows and schedules to ensure data freshness and availability.

OLAP and Data Modelling:

• Design and manage SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services) cubes to support multidimensional data analysis and ad hoc querying.
• Build and maintain data models that are aligned with business intelligence requirements, ensuring optimal data flow and access patterns.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

• Work closely with business analysts, product owners, and stakeholders from the airline and packaged tour business to understand requirements and develop scalable data solutions.
• Translate business needs specified in high technical specifications to delivering ETL Packages for data warehouse enhancements, reporting, and analytics solutions.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including application developers, QA Team, Release Engineering and deployment teams to support development and delivery of Data Warehouse Analytic Solutions

General Responsibilities

• Be a key member of Data Engineering Team to implement innovative technical solutions providing rapid value to business users through delivery of new functionality and enhancements to existing functionality.
• Produce low-level solution designs for both yourself and the wider team to implement as part of your senior role

• Deliver user stories, meeting your own goals and supporting your team members in meeting the team’s commitments.
• Coach junior Data Engineers in the team; Assist the Lead Data Engineering– Should be able to act as the team representative in lead’s absence.
• Share skills and techniques, helping drive quality improvements across the team.
• Work closely with your colleagues asking the right questions and ensuring that we build the right functionality from the start
• Actively participate in agile activities, championing continuous improvement and promoting the agile way of working
