Role & responsibilities


1. Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification

  • Conduct Electrical Hazard Assessments: Perform thorough risk assessments of electrical systems to identify potential electrical hazards (e.g., shock, arc flash, electrocution, and fire hazards) and evaluate the likelihood of incidents.
  • Risk Mitigation: Develop strategies and safety measures to reduce or eliminate electrical risks. This may include system upgrades, implementing safer work practices, and improving hazard control protocols.
  • Evaluate Work Environments: Analyze work environments to identify electrical safety hazards and recommend control measures such as proper grounding, insulation, or circuit protection.

2. Safety Standards and Compliance

  • Ensure Compliance with Electrical Safety Standards: Ensure that all electrical systems, equipment, and practices comply with relevant national and international electrical safety standards, such as NEC (National Electrical Code), NFPA 70E, IEC, and OSHA.
  • Stay Updated on Regulations: Continuously monitor and stay updated with changes to safety regulations, industry best practices, and emerging electrical safety standards.
  • Audit and Inspect Electrical Systems: Regularly inspect electrical systems and equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations and identify any deficiencies or areas for improvement.

3. Development and Implementation of Safety Programs

  • Create Electrical Safety Programs: Design and implement electrical safety programs, including training, procedures, and policies to ensure safe practices in electrical work.
  • Develop Safe Work Procedures: Establish and enforce safe work practices for electrical installations, maintenance, and repairs, ensuring they align with established safety protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Establish Emergency Response Plans: Develop and maintain emergency response procedures for electrical incidents such as electrical fires, shock, or electrocution, and ensure that employees are trained on these procedures.

4. Safety Training and Education

  • Conduct Electrical Safety Training: Provide training programs for employees and contractors on electrical safety, including hazard recognition, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Develop Training Materials: Create instructional materials, manuals, and presentations for electrical safety training programs.
  • Ensure Ongoing Safety Education: Provide refresher training and ongoing education to ensure workers remain current with electrical safety standards and best practices.

5. Safety Equipment and PPE Evaluation

  • Assess Electrical Safety Equipment: Evaluate the effectiveness and condition of electrical safety equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE) such as insulated gloves, face shields, and arc flash suits.
  • Ensure Proper Use of PPE: Ensure that employees are properly trained on the correct usage of PPE and other electrical safety equipment to minimize the risk of injury.
  • Monitor Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance, inspection, and replacement of electrical safety equipment to ensure it remains in good working condition.

6. Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis

  • Investigate Electrical Accidents: Investigate electrical accidents, incidents, or near misses to determine their root cause and make recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Develop Corrective Actions: Based on incident investigations, recommend changes in procedures, equipment, or training to prevent future occurrences of electrical accidents.
  • Incident Documentation: Maintain detailed records of all electrical safety incidents, including investigations, corrective actions, and follow-up measures.

7. Safety Audits and Inspections

  • Conduct Safety Audits: Perform regular audits of electrical systems, installations, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and to identify potential hazards.
  • Inspect Electrical Infrastructure: Inspect electrical wiring, circuit breakers, distribution boards, and other electrical infrastructure to verify that they are safe and functioning properly.
  • Monitor Safety Performance: Track and analyze safety performance metrics related to electrical systems to identify trends and areas for improvement.

8. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Develop Emergency Procedures: Establish clear procedures for responding to electrical emergencies, such as electrical shock, arc flash incidents, or electrical fires.
  • Coordinate Emergency Drills: Lead and participate in emergency response drills to ensure employees are prepared for electrical safety incidents and know how to act in case of an emergency.
  • Emergency Equipment Testing: Regularly test emergency systems, such as backup generators, emergency lighting, and fire alarms, to ensure they are functioning properly in the event of an electrical emergency.

9. Electrical Safety Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain Documentation: Create and maintain records of electrical safety audits, risk assessments, inspections, incident reports, and training programs.
  • Generate Reports: Prepare detailed reports for management on electrical safety issues, compliance audits, incident investigations, and recommended improvements.
  • Track Safety Metrics: Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to electrical safety to monitor the effectiveness of safety programs and identify areas for improvement.

10. Continuous Improvement and Technology Integration

  • Advocate for New Technologies: Identify and recommend new electrical technologies or safety innovations that could improve safety, efficiency, or compliance.
  • Promote Safety Culture: Foster a safety-conscious culture within the organization by encouraging continuous learning, accountability, and employee engagement in safety initiatives.
  • Implement System Improvements: Work with engineering and maintenance teams to implement improvements in electrical systems that enhance safety, such as upgrading to safer equipment or automating safety controls.
