Safety Trainer

Role & responsibilities

1. Design and Develop Safety Training Programs

• Custom Safety Programs: Develop and design comprehensive safety training programs tailored to specific hazards in the oil & gas and construction industries, such as scaffolding, work-at-height, confined spaces, equipment handling, fire safety, etc.
• Training Materials: Create or update training materials, presentations, manuals, and handouts that are relevant to the tasks being taught.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all training programs comply with industry standards, local regulations (e.g., OSHA, HSE), and company policies.

2. Deliver Safety Training

• Classroom and Practical Training: Lead both theoretical and practical safety training sessions on-site or in a classroom setting, ensuring a balance of hands-on training (e.g., scaffolding assembly) and knowledge of safety regulations.
• Specialized Training: Provide in-depth training on specific activities such as:
• Scaffolding Safety: Training workers in the safe construction, maintenance, and dismantling of scaffolding structures.
• Work-at-Height Training: Educate workers on the proper use of fall protection systems, including harnesses, lanyards, and fall arrest systems.
• Confined Space Training: Teach workers how to recognize hazards and implement safety procedures when working in confined or enclosed spaces.
• Hazardous Material Handling: If applicable, teach workers the safe handling of hazardous materials in both construction and oil & gas sites.
• Fire and Emergency Response: Provide training on fire safety measures, emergency response, evacuation plans, and the use of fire extinguishers.

3. Assess and Evaluate Training Needs

• Identify Gaps: Assess the skills and knowledge gaps of employees through observations, audits, or discussions with supervisors to design focused training programs.
• Risk Analysis: Conduct risk assessments to identify areas where specific safety training is required (e.g., high-risk zones like scaffolding or hazardous areas in oil & gas operations).
• Continuous Learning: Implement a system for continuous training and refresher courses to ensure safety knowledge stays current with industry changes and evolving regulations.

4. Monitor and Track Safety Performance

• Training Evaluation: Assess the effectiveness of training programs through tests, practical assessments, and feedback from trainees.
• Incident Reporting: Review accident reports and safety incidents to understand where additional training may be needed or if specific risks need more focus.
• Certification Management: Ensure that all workers who undergo training receive appropriate certifications, and track their recertification dates for ongoing compliance.

5. Ensure Compliance with Safety Regulations

• Legal and Industry Standards: Ensure that all safety training programs are aligned with legal safety requirements such as OSHA, HSE, ANSI, and other regulatory bodies standards.
• Audit Safety Procedures: Conduct periodic safety audits and inspections to confirm that workers apply the training they've received and follow safety guidelines.
• Safety Programs Documentation: Keep detailed records of all training sessions, including attendance, topics covered, materials used, and certifications issued.

6. Provide On-the-Job Coaching and Support

• Practical Support: Provide guidance and coaching on-site during high-risk activities, such as scaffolding erection or working at heights, to ensure safety protocols are followed in real-world conditions.
• Mentoring: Mentor and coach junior safety trainers and other team members on how to conduct safety training effectively and ensure workers safety.

7. Update Training Programs with New Technologies or Regulations

• Stay Current: Continuously update training programs to reflect the latest safety technology, procedures, and industry best practices.
• Industry Changes: Stay informed about new regulations, technologies, and hazards emerging in the oil & gas and construction sectors, and integrate them into training programs.

8. Promote Safety Culture

• Engagement: Actively work to promote a safety-first culture across all levels of the organization by encouraging workers to engage in safety practices and speak up about hazards.
• Behavioral Safety: Train workers to recognize unsafe behaviors and report unsafe actions, helping foster a proactive safety culture.
• Safety Campaigns: Lead or participate in safety campaigns, toolbox talks, and other safety communication efforts to raise awareness about common hazards and preventive measures.

9. Handle Emergency Preparedness Training

• Crisis Response Training: Develop training programs for responding to emergencies such as fires, gas leaks, or structural failures.
• First Aid and Rescue Operations: Provide training in basic first aid, CPR, and emergency rescue operations, especially for high-risk tasks like working at heights or in confined spaces.
• Drills: Organize and conduct emergency drills to ensure that workers know how to respond effectively in the event of an emergency.

10. Reporting and Documentation

• Training Reports: Create detailed reports on training activities, attendance, results, and any incidents that occurred.
• Safety Metrics: Maintain statistics on accident rates, training completion, and effectiveness to present to management.
• Record Keeping: Ensure that all records of certifications, training sessions, and evaluations are kept up-to-date and stored properly for regulatory compliance.

11. Collaboration with Management

• Safety Collaboration: Work closely with site managers, safety officers, and other stakeholders to ensure that safety training aligns with site-specific requirements and project timelines.
• Feedback Loops: Provide feedback to senior management on safety trends, training needs, and program effectiveness.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

• Certifications: Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA, or other industry-specific certifications in safety training.
• Experience: Significant experience in safety training and field operations in both the oil & gas and construction industries.
• Strong Communication: Excellent ability to deliver complex safety concepts in clear, understandable terms.
• Leadership: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to influence safety culture and ensure compliance across all levels.
• Knowledge of Hazards: In-depth knowledge of hazards related to scaffolding, working at heights, hazardous chemicals, and other construction-specific or oil & gas-specific dangers.
