Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Develop and Implement Safety Policies and Procedures

  • Establish comprehensive safety policies and protocols that comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Ensure policies are up-to-date and relevant to current construction practices.
  • Implement safety plans, including emergency procedures, hazard assessments, and fall protection strategies.

2. Conduct Site Inspections and Safety Audits

  • Regularly visit job sites to identify potential hazards and unsafe practices.
  • Conduct thorough safety audits to evaluate the effectiveness of safety measures.
  • Ensure that safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are available, properly maintained, and being used by workers.

3. Train and Educate Workers

  • Provide safety training for all workers, including new hires and subcontractors, on topics such as safe work practices, use of PPE, machinery operation, and emergency response.
  • Ensure workers are aware of their roles in maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Organize regular toolbox talks and safety briefings to reinforce key safety points.

4. Monitor Compliance with Safety Regulations

  • Ensure that the construction site is compliant with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations or other relevant safety standards.
  • Monitor adherence to local and industry-specific safety codes, and update practices as necessary.

5. Investigate Accidents and Incidents

  • Lead investigations into any workplace accidents, injuries, or near misses.
  • Identify the root cause of incidents and recommend corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Maintain detailed records of accidents and incidents for reporting and analysis.

6. Develop Emergency Response Plans

  • Create and maintain site-specific emergency response plans.
  • Ensure all workers are trained to respond to emergencies such as fires, electrical hazards, or structural collapses.
  • Organize and oversee regular emergency drills.

7. Coordinate Safety Meetings

  • Schedule and lead safety meetings, such as weekly or monthly safety briefings with the team.
  • Facilitate discussions about safety concerns, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Actively listen to workers' feedback and concerns about safety on the job.

8. Maintain Safety Records and Reports

  • Keep accurate records of all safety training, inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Prepare regular safety reports for senior management, regulatory bodies, and clients.
  • Track the effectiveness of safety measures and make recommendations for improvement.

9. Risk Assessment and Hazard Control

  • Perform job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for various construction tasks.
  • Ensure that risks are identified and eliminated or controlled through appropriate measures.
  • Oversee the use of safety devices, scaffolding, and other protective equipment.

10. Work with Contractors and Subcontractors

  • Ensure subcontractors and contractors understand and follow site safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with project managers to integrate safety considerations into the project planning and scheduling.
  • Communicate safety expectations clearly to all parties involved.

11. Safety Culture Promotion

  • Foster a positive safety culture on the construction site, encouraging workers to prioritize safety at all times.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating a commitment to safety in all aspects of the job.
  • Motivate workers to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others.

12. Ensure Compliance with Environmental Regulations

  • Ensure that construction activities are carried out in compliance with environmental regulations related to safety.
  • Implement practices that minimize environmental hazards, such as waste management, pollution control, and noise reduction.

13. Resource Management

  • Ensure that adequate resources (personnel, training, and equipment) are available for the successful implementation of safety programs.
  • Coordinate with management to ensure proper budgeting for safety initiatives, training, and equipment.

14. Provide Safety Reporting and Metrics

  • Track and analyze safety performance using metrics such as injury rates, near misses, and safety audits.
  • Provide feedback and improvements based on data-driven insights.
  • Create actionable reports to inform stakeholders of safety performance and any required changes.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and other safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and training skills.
  • Ability to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Analytical skills to assess risks and develop safety strategies.
  • Certification in safety management (e.g., CSP, CHST) or construction safety certifications is often preferred.
