Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They had 4 interviews.
McK1: Have faint recollections. However I remember I did well on the case and had loadsa HR involved specially in my work on internships and research paper.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: McK2: The interviewer was a PhD in Chem Engg from Stanford followed by an MBA from Harvard. I found this before going in and got real nervous. He started off with some Chemical Engg questions and soon realized it was no use! (He did even comment that I had not learnt anything in Chem engg in the 4 years). We then moved on a case of petrochemical industry where a new player wanted to enter an oversaturated market. I concluded that scale is important and the entry has to be below the existing market price. Some HR including my question to him. Had a long discussion on Foreign MBA vs Indian MBA. At the end of the interview, I guess I had done a good enough job (surprisingly after the start I had) and was called in for the next 2 interviews..

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: McK3: This was a disaster! And a big one. I was given an extremely easy case on nuclear reactor vs coal reactor economics. Simple mathematics which I screwed up because of just 1 simple error. I realized the same pretty late and pointed it out. He said it was ok. No HR

Round: Other Interview
Experience: McK4: The whole interview was a discussion on my BTP and seminar. BTP was related to Phosphoric Acid production. The discussion revolved around whether phosphoric acid should be produced in India or whether we should produce it outside from where we import ore. Then we moved on to my seminar which was related to Kyoto Protocol. Finally I asked question on how different is a foreign MBA vis a vis an Indian one. Very peaceful and fun interview!
Tips: The single biggest mistake I committed was going in a haste into the McK 3rd interview. I got involved in some placement work between the interviews and forgot to carry my folder or even a pen. This is probably why I did not do well on the case (which was probably the easiest of all 8). Its very important that you take 5 minutes off before walking in, get your composure and stop worrying about other things and just attend to the interview on hand. Key learnings included the fact that it is relatively difficult to come back if you don't start well. Thus its is better to take something like 5 seconds before you answer the first 2-3 questions to recollect thoughts, organize them and frame them well. Also that you need to be comfortable with everything on your resume. I appeared for 8 interviews and never mentioned/was asked anything related to MI which I thought was the most important point on my resume. Instead I was questioned on my hobbies. Smallest points on the resume could be the ones you are grilled most on. Another very important thing about case interviews is the fact that the interviewer will be guiding you all through to the final solution. Any thing that he speaks should be heard and taken notice of. Most of the times there will be a small hint given at some point and all you need to do is catch on to it! Structuring your answers is extremely important. One more important thing to keep in mind is that all your answers should kind of show to the company that you can FIT into the company, the job and the culture. It is also important you walk in with the feeling that you can get the job. Specifically in cases, if you get stuck, take some time off to think. Structure your solution well, it carries the maximum weight.

General Tips: Firstly suit up only in case you are comfortable in it. It makes no sense to wear it and be uncomfortable throughout. And in my opinion even if you do not wear one, it never goes against you (at least consulting). For companies like FMCG/Tech its better not to suit up because it doesn't go with the company cultures. If its IBanking, it is good if you wear one. It is very important that you have some questions for the interviewer for any given company. And it is more important that the questions are intelligent and genuine. Attending PPT/ reading up website is a must for the same. Most importantly you should not talk to any other candidate on interview experience before your interview. The interview changes for every candidate. If say for example you hear the case beforehand, the company is bound to find out which would ruin your chances for sure. Further talking to people who have already appeared increases the nervousness. Posture is something that you have to take care of. People have a tendency to relax which should not be the case. You should seem eager for both the interview and the job. While answering any question the most important things to keep in mind are • Take 5 seconds off before venturing into any answer. Compose your thoughts real well. Then start. Its better to get the whole thing in a impactful way then to miss out on certain points. It also doubles up as giving the interview a feel that you are thinking before answering.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Shortlist is made based on resume. Last year, about 20 people were shortlisted from nearly 200 applicants. They look for people who have excelled in various verticals like academics, leadership qualities etc. After the shortlist based on resume, a workshop was held by the company where they explained the selection process. Each selected candidate was allotted a “buddy” in the company with whom they'll be constantly interacting and preparing for the interviews. The test paper consisted of business problems, similar to case interviews but in written format. Questions based on data interpretation were also asked. All questions were objective type questions. The written test is held just to make sure that all the shortlisted candidates clear a basic cut off of knowledge about data analysis and case studies.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Problems related to business will be given and they'll ask you to suggest a solution.
Tips: Some sample case interview questions are available on McKinsey's website.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Questions will be asked based on resume- to evaluate and validate resume points.
Tips: Try to express your personal story in an interesting and innovative way.

General Tips: A good CGPA and good core interns will be useful. In the resume, pitch about credentials and extracurricular activities you taken part in to show how you have contributed. Focus more on the impact of your achievements and try to quantify the impact.Attending the workshop conducted by the company (if done this year) is essential.
Skill Tips: "Leadership skills, like leading a team for Inter-IIT, being a core/ secretary would give you an edge over others."

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Resume shortlist (around 20 people)
Tips: Resume shortlist- peaks in the resume: An all-round and dynamic personality, ability to multi-task and handle pressure, proactive nature and initiatives taken in PORs, achievements in the field of sports, literature and arts contribute in resume short listing. They look for people who have used their time in insti wisely and are passionate
about things they do. A crisp and well written resume forms a good first impression. Invest enough time to prepare the resume and get it reviewed by seniors.

Round: Interview
Experience: 3 rounds of interviews. Interviews were focused on case studies. No separate HR round. Inter-personal skills were tested during the case study and conversation with the interviewer.
Tips: Case interview- Break the problem down, approach systematically, think on your feet, take cues from the interviewer and direct the solution accordingly. The problem solving approach and line of thought is tested. There is no single
solution for the cases. The approach is important, not the final answer. Striking a good rapport with the interviewer, projecting confidence, being yourself and enjoying the interview process is very important.

A few questions asked about the Case Study:
1) Identifying the reasons for loss incurred by a motel (relevant data was provided)
2) Evaluating different aspects of setting up a business
3) Guesstimate: Estimate the number of windows in a skyscraper
4) Estimate the scope of 4G in India. Is introducing 4G a good idea?reas
5) A foreign elevator company operating in India is incurring losses.
6)What are the likely issues and how can they be fixed

General Tips: These four/ five years in IIT are the most crucial years to mould the personality of an individual. Seize every opportunity you and make the most of it. Manage time well and prioritize various activities. Try to get industrial exposure through internships. Good communication skills and a confident personality are very important. I started preparation seriously after getting shortlisted . The company allotted
buddies from the firm who helped us with placement preparation. I started reading economic times from the beginning of 7th sem. One month was sufficient to prepare. However, one can start preparing puzzles and reading up Economic Times a little earlier.
Skill Tips: The standard HR questions can be found online. Also be prepared to answer questions like 'why do you want to join our company?', 'why do you prefer a career in investment banking over consulting' or vice versa. Know you resume inside out as some HR questions will be directly based on you resume. Highlight you role, achievement and learning outcome while answering such questions.

Case study videos by Victor Cheng are helpful in building a foundation. Case in point is a good book to start with. Interactive cases available on all consult websites are very helpful and give an interview like
experience. Case study books by Kellogg, Wharton, Harvard can be found on LAN. Solving a few cases in a structured and systematic manner will help in developing the required skills. The Economic Times and business magazines also help in developing a general business acumen which helps solve cases. Solve cases in groups of 3-4.

HR- know yourself and your resume thoroughly.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Interview
Experience: My first interview started on the age old note of, “tell me something about yourself.” It proceeded through a few more questions to a case study of estimating the number of marriages in India per year.

Round: Interview
Experience: I fell for THE FRAMEWORK which is not the best thing to happen during a case study but thanks to the interviewer that I recovered and did a satisfactory job. In my second interview it was again some HR questions followed by the case about increasing the viewership of channel V. It being one of the very few channels I ever watched I did good justice to this case.

Round: Interview
Experience: My next interviewer jumped directly to a case which involved the cutting down of time spent in a medical procedure. Here, some of my Robin Cook novels and the series ‘Lost’ came to help and I was able to think in a medical fashion providing suggestions which the interviewer regarded to be good. But well, looks like I was destined to go for more interviews. So, a halfhearted goodbye Mckinsey.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The company looks for exceptional performances in the resumes. They want to have people who are good on all fronts and are exceptional in a few things. So tailor the resume accordingly and bring out all the spikes that you can put forth.
Tips: They usually have a resume making workshop where they tell about their expectations from the resumes. Make full use of that workshop.

Round: Interview
Experience: I appeared for 4 interviews in total. Each interview had case study as well as HR questions. It is very important to engage the interviewer in a conversation and remain confident throughout the interview.
Tips: Show the interviewer that you are really passionate about whatever you have done.

General Tips: Pre-Placement Preparation

1) Selecting sectors or companies
Select your group of target companies and sectors. You should realize what your interests are and what kind of job would suit you, and according to that you should prepare a list of companies that you are going to focus on primarily. This list should not be too narrow that you have too few companies to target and not too broad that you end up sitting for every company visiting the campus.

2) Attending PPTs
The PPTs and the workshops organized by the companies form a key input in the decision process of choosing the companies. Be attentive during the PPTs and note key points mentioned – like the profile, compensation structure and the contacts of the people (especially alumni) in the company. This helps a lot during the preparation for the particular company.

3) Resume
The best way to start the preparation for the interview process is to start by making a list of all things that you have done in your life. This list should contain every small and big thing that you have done. Once the above list is made, make a master resume out of the list by retaining all the important things and putting them into formal language. The smaller works can be kept for narrating during interviews. If your master resume is properly made then preparing company tailored resume becomes very easy. After the master resume is done, it is time to make sector/company specific resumes. Every sector must have different resumes and, if possible, also make the resume specific to every company. Take feedback from your friends and seniors and make necessary adjustments.

4) Communication skills
You can make a GD group and conduct regular GDs to help you prepare for the GDs. In fact, also ask your friends to conduct mock interviews and record these interviews. You will actually come to know what to do and how you react during the interviews.

5) Written Tests
If you are targeting companies that take CAT-like aptitude tests, then prepare for them by solving some CAT papers. These tests just check practice and someone who has been preparing will definitely have an edge over a person who is not in touch.

6) HR Interviews
Make a list of the commonly asked HR questions and then prepare answers for them. Do not learn the answers by heart but make sure you know the important points that you want to mention for each question.

7) Case Interviews
The best way to prepare for a case interview is to form groups and solve case studies interactively as you would do in an interview.

8. CSE Preparation
For the CSE companies, I brushed up basic data structures and algorithms as well as C/C++ and Java. Other than that, I also glanced through Operating Systems, Compilers, Networks and databases. Make sure that you understand the basic concepts behind these things as well as particular details of popular implementations of each of these systems.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: McKinsey looks for a spike in your resume, people who have commendable achievements is their field of choice, academics, extra curriculars or sports. So be sure to make your resume accordingly. McKinsey adds a lot of weight-age to formal awards, scholarships, achievements (like inter-IIT) etc. But if you don't have them (like me) you just have to make extra effort to show that you have equivalent achievements.

Round: Interview
Experience: First, I was asked about myself and mostly my connection to dance and the dance club. (Some interviewers do this to make you comfortable at the same time analyzing your personality). In the first interview I was given an estimation case about the dish TV industry. Here the interviewer was mostly interested in my approach to solving the problem and if applicable my numerical skills.

The second interview was a pure business case about the printing business. Here my creativity and business sense (read common sense as applicable to a business situation) was put to test.
Tips: McKinsey interviews are mostly case study based. So prepare accordingly. Once you get shortlisted they send you a ton of material, search for a “Vault” case book amongst this pile. Reading that should be enough ;). First read the basic material by you and once you are confident enough make a group of around 3 people and practice case studies.

I guess this job opportunity meant a lot to all of us and it did to me too. I became nervous and that severely affected my performance and moreover I looked under confident. Take on every interview as if that job doesn't mean anything to you.

General Tips: Internship: (attention third year people!)
When it comes to the placement interview, internships play pivotal role. There are rarely any interviews where the interviewee isn't drilled on their internships. So, please don‟t treat an internship as a paid vacation. Good work done during the internship gives one the confidence that can very well bowl the interviewer over (as it did in my case :D). Believe me confidence does much more than get you a job; it determines success and failure in most
undertakings. Internship gives you the first chance to build that up … use it!

Pre Placement Talks:
Please attend the ppts of at least those companies which fall into your sector of interest. At ppts you get to see a lot more things than the boring presentations and the pay package. Most companies bring along with them alumni who have spent a few years in the company. Observing or interacting with them will give you a good assessment of what you are going to be a few years from now if you join that company. For example I observed that alumni of XYZ Company were not as upbeat and confident as alumni of ABC Company (names have
been hidden on request ;) ) even if XYZ was paying plenty more than ABC. I knew then and there that I would want to join ABC and never applied to XYZ. Be sure to utilize them and be sure to clear all your doubts and conceptions. Once you start attending presentations you will observe junta asking questions just to score brownie points with the speaker. Believe me it won't help one bit in landing them a job!

Resumes:
Making an appealing resume is the single most important step in the placement process and IITK is notorious for its bad resumes, so attend workshops. Like most IITK junta I sucked at making a resume (and still do), but whatever little skill I have, I got through workshops. One workshop I would advise everyone to attend is the resume making workshop of McKinsey. Get your resumes checked and edited by those who have been through placement especially by those from other IITs (I know this will hurt a lot of egos, but IITB's resumes are some of the best. Those dudes have mastered the art of making an impact with whatever little they've got, while we excel at doing exactly the opposite :P). Prepare an impactful resume and don't submit the same resume to every company, make changes based on the profile.
