Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The test was in MCQ format for both technical and aptitude & general knowledge sections. The difficulty level was average. There were around 5 general knowledge/current affairs questions. About 15 quantitative aptitude questions and 20 technical questions from subjects taught till 6th semester. 11 out of 18 students were shortlisted for the next round.
Tips: Brush up your basics in all the major subjects. Refer quantitative aptitude books and practice every type of sums.
Duration: 1 hour
Total Questions: 40

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: All 11 shortlisted students were part of the same GD. We were given 5 topics out of which we had to decide on unanimously. All the topics were general/social in nature and not related to current affairs of the world. 10 mins are given after the selection of the topic to think and jot down the points. The first person to start speaking has to introduce the topic and then start to put his point. There should also be a consensus during the end.
Tips: Use your initial 10 mins well. Write down all the points for both for and against of the topic. You need not necessarily stick to one aspect. Don't speak too much or too less. Just the apt! Give chance to others as well but at the same time don't hesitate and hold yourself back. You can also say "I agree with this but I would also add.." or " I disagree with this point, I feel...". But these statements should be very polite.
Duration: 30 minutes

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: 8 students out of 11 were shortlisted for this round. This round was individual interview by a panel of two of company's officials. They asked questions from different sections to all the students. Some of them were asked application based questions for example is it easier to dry clothes in hot and humid outside than in an air conditioned room, what is the use of psychrometric charts, is cooling tower efficient. In my case the questions were based on my internships. I did my internships from consultancies like Jacobs so they asked my about basic documents used in the those companies and also about my assignments that I did.
Tips: Basics are very important in this round and so is your internships, project(if any). Keep your mind open while answering, workout all the conditions in your mind related to the question.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Round 1: MCQs: tech + apti

Round: Other Interview
Experience: Round 2: Interviews; (a) Tech (b) HR

General Tips: It was a Good experience! Tech questions asked were not very difficult, nor too easy, exactly how an interview should be. They were chilled out but smart people. They didn't believe in stress interview, etc. but their questions were direct and logical.
Skill Tips: Don't go for books for last minute brush up. First go through the codes, (456,800). Also, for environmental- the lab manual! Books and Shri Hari notes would be too much for last hours, but the lab manuals have all the necessary and important procedures, and also limits of various pollutants/minerals as specified by the codes. Very helpful for last minute work. Sitaram sir's notes for soil mech should be sufficient. All these done, 1st round should be a cakewalk. Also, there is no harm in saying "I don't know", (not for all the questions of course!). Don't try to give round-about or approximate answers in tech interview. That is not appreciated. They don't expect you to know everything they ask. Just be polite and say "I don't know", but mention that you'll make it a point to learn and understand those topics before you join the company. (Limit State Design for SteelStructures is a big example. We're taught Working Stress, which is now obsolete except for bridge design. Just say that you were not taught, and that you'll read it on your own before you join!)

Interview Questionnaire

2 Questions

  • Q1. Thermodynamics and heat transfer.
  • Q2. IC engines

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: First Round was Test- Test 1 was aptitude test had English, basic math and logical reasoning. Test 2 was technical. It had questions from all areas of Mechanical. Since TCE is mainly involved in power engineering expect a lot of questions on Thermodynamics Heat transfer Fluid mechanics and Strength of Materials.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The second round was a technical round: Predominantly easy questions from thermodynamics and heat transfer. Some very basic questions on IC engines and their classifications as well as distinguishing features. The technical round tests basics and a brief revision is more than enough to know the answers.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Third round is HR. Standard generic questions such as why do u want to join our company? and about comfort levels on working in different places in India etc. HR round is for formality sake. They pretty much decide in the tech round whether you are going to be recruited or not.

General Tips: It was Challenging. It took me a month or two to get past aptitude test because I was slow with mental calculations and had a a block against clearing apti test with negative markings and I messed up a few interviews after that also. But after a while you get used to the whole process.
Skill Tips: Keep Calm. Placement procedures are a test of patience and composure. Don't let the anxiety of wanting a job cloud your judgement or hamper your performance. Take mock interviews if given by your seniors. Refer GATE tutors for revising technical concepts.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: We were asked to fill our resume on the company website. The top 30 students were allowed to sit for the aptitude test.
Tips: Preparation for this round should start from the first semester itself. CGPA should be maintained properly, preferably over 8

Round: Test
Experience: The QA questions were easy to medium level aptitude questions. For someone preparing for competitive exams like GATE or CAT, the section would be relatively easier. The verbal section included comprehensions, and grammar questions.
Tips: Practice aptitude questions from websites like indiabix.com from the beginning of your final year. Also look at previous year questions for the company you are appearing for.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Questions: 50

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: The interview was a mix of technical and HR questions. Answered the HR questions confidently. Was not able to answer some technical questions but explained most of them when the interview gave some hints. Overall it was a pleasant interview.
Tips: HR questions like 'Describe yourself' ' 'Where do you see yourself in 'x' years' are general interview questions and should be prepared well. Listening to the pre interview presentation is also very important, mainly the career and salary graphs. As L&T is a core civil company, a sound knowledge is required. Be ready to use concepts from class XI and XII too. Be prepared to answer questions from your project and training.
Don't make wild guesses. If don't know the answer to any question, say so. If you are unsure about an answer, take permission to make a guess. Take time to think before answering. In case of conceptual questions, think aloud. If the interviewer sees that you are technically sound, he himself will nudge you towards the correct answer. And be confident. Don't be scared. Sit straight and answer clearly and smartly.
