Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume that I used while applying in different companies was nearly the same, however I did incorporate certain changes in areas of interest and the projects to make them more compatible with the profile of the company in which I was applying for; for instance while applying in Schlumberger I highlighted some of the technical projects.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: I was the last person to be interviewed, thus the interviewer was tired. He firstly asked me to talk about myself. Then he asked me to mention some quality that differentiates me form the rest and about which i had not mentioned in my resume. I told him about my second year internship which i did under a professor who got so impressed with my work that he turned up the following year in the institute to hire some research scholars.
After this question a foreign official of the company came to accompany the lone Indian interviewer.
He asked some questions like ‘What is the official website of Schlumberger?’ and when was the last time I had visited the website?
Next the interviewer asked me to specify an incident when I had to make a tough decision. I narrated a situation that I faced while I was the chairperson of SAE (a department level student body). Being the chairperson I had to cut short the team going into next year’s tournament in spite of the fact that everyone had done a good job that particular year.
Then he started asking about SAE’s activities. Lastly, he asked me to talk about my dream job. I told him that my dream job is the project that i was dealing with back then, this job involved leading a team.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Schlumberger is a very famous company as far as placements in IIT. The package is among the highest packages offered by companies coming for placements here. It is necessary that you go through their site which is SLB.com. Go thought Wikipedia section of the company.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: It contains all significant achievements of your life till now. Know your resume well. I mentioned my Internships and Extracurricular Activities in detail specifically for this company. They would go through your resume and ask you questions from it. So keep it concise and don’t fake anything.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interview was totally an HR interview and contained mostly personal questions. The interview lasted for around 20-25 minutes.
Tips: Be yourself, don’t fake anything, keep calm, try to lighten the mood, be smartly and appropriately dressed.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: The first source of information about the company was the company’s website. Also apart from that I also interacted with a lot of seniors from my college who are already working there.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. Resume is one of the most important parts in placement preparation. A student should dedicate at least 3-4 days for resume preparation. I specifically highlighted my extracurricular with facts and figures and tried to write about my projects in short as my technical knowledge was poor. I used to change my “Area of Interests” as well as subjects studied according to the company. I tried to write those field as my interests in which I had thorough knowledge. Schlumberger looks for people with all round performance and specially if you are into sports its a added advantage.
Tips: Try to include details about your achievements in sports.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The final round was an interview. There were two interviewers, one was an IIT Roorkee alumni and other was a senior personnel from one of their foreign offices. They were trying to make it a stress interview. I remained very cheerful throughout the interview and this helped me a lot I guess.
The first question was regarding my look (I keep a bald head). I defended it by saying that I am confident and hence I like it. After hearing that I am from Bhopal, they gave me a virtual situation to answer. They asked me what I would do if I am posted in Sudan and the Sudanese people hate Indians. Additionally I had to keep in mind that I am just a six month old recruit in Schlumberger and there are around eight senior employees who are from Sudan. My first response to such a situation was that I would ask for a replacement. He laughed at me and told me that it is not a solution. Then I explained to him that I would try to make my fellow workers understand that may be Indians are good at something and it is because of this we are called for such jobs. I also told him that I would tell them about our history and that we Indians are a very peaceful race and haven’t had wars for thousands of years. He then asked me if I was trying to project that Indians are superior to other races to which I replied no. I said that we are first humans and then citizens of some country and because of the upbringing we may be good at something while others may be better at something else. I said the same thing in different ways twice or thrice, so the Indian guy interrupted me and asked whether I have a habit of speaking too much. To this I said that yes and also told him that this might be because I am a bit stressed out. He literally shouted that I am boring as hell but I was still laughing.
He then moved on to my resume and asked me about my intern in detail and also asked me about my extracurricular activities. On hearing about all this he said that I look like a guy who would go for an MBA and leave Schlumberger within a period of 2 years. I responded that I had never had such thoughts and I would like to experience industry culture for few years. He also asked where I see myself in five years to which I gave a lucid and simple reply.
The foreigner asked that being an Indian I would be strongly attached to my family and asked would my father have any issues if I go outside. The Indian asked whether I had a girlfriend and would she have a problem if I was to go out. To all this I replied that they would have a problem initially but they are all educated individuals and they know that it is part and parcel of professional life to move out of a place/country and eventually they would be able to adjust accordingly. The interview concluded with me asking few questions related to profile and Schlumberger culture.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Many of my seniors work at Schlumberger. They were the main source of information about the company and the kind of work there.

2 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. From what I got to know from others who had appeared for Schlumberger’s interview, is that they look for all-round performance i.e. academics plus extracurricular activities as well. So I did include all that in my resume. Students were shortlisted for the next round on the basis of their resume. Almost all the students with CGPA greater than 6.5 were shortlisted for the next round. More than 100 students were shortlisted.
Tips: Just make sure that you have done good research about the company – what they do, where are they located etc. – and prepare answers to some standard HR interview questions. It all comes down to your verbal skills and how you present yourselves in the other rounds.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I got relevant information about the company from a lot of my seniors. I also went through the company website as this was also very important. At the same time I also got relevant information about the company from their pre-placement talk.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I usually changed my “Areas of Interest” as per the company profile. For Schlumberger I laid emphasis on extracurricular activities and especially on any achievements related to sports.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The final round was the interview round and almost all the questions were HR questions. I was asked questions like ‘We’ll be posting you across some of the harshest terrains across the globe, would you be able to survive under such rigorous conditions?’ From my resume they upheld a notion that I was a “mama’s boy” and surviving under such distressing conditions won’t be possible for me. I tried to convince them about my vigour of surviving in difficult conditions but to no avail. I wasn’t selected for a job by the company.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most of the information regarding the company was obtained by attending the Pre Placement Talk. It was really informative as it told what the company actually does as well as the working conditions.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There was no resume based selection for the particular profile (the profile was under the Oracle Communications Global Business Unit). First there was an online test which consisted of CAT like questions. After that for my particular profile there was a written test on C++ and algorithms. The first written test consisted of questions on verbal/logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude and verbal ability. After the two rounds of written test, we had to go through two rounds of personal interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They were looking for students with knowledge of C++ or any other programming language. They asked me questions on data structures and a lot of questions on algorithms. They were the common algorithms and some of them I had to think over the interview.HR interview consisted of questions on strength and weakness, morale/ethics, upbringing and where do I see myself after “n” no. of years. They were in general trying to check whether I will fit into their organisation and not leave the company in the near future.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I prepared a single resume but changed my areas of interest while applying in different companies. For instance while applying in Samsung Electronics I wrote about my strengths in data structures and various programming languages. I had a long list of extra-curricular activities under my belt; I made sure to select a handful of relevant activities and mentioned them in my resume.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round in the recruitment process of Oracle was the written test. It was an online written test. The test consisted of 6 sections: logical reasoning, aptitude, programming, English and a 5 minute quick test. I cannot recall the 6th section. In 5 minute quick test section the questions were like finding the incorrect number in the given sequence of numbers or finding the next number in the given sequence of numbers and so on. In programming section the questions were from data structure and database management. However, not a lot of weightage was given to this section, even a candidate who had performed well in the other sections but not so well in the programming section qualified for the next round.
Oracle shortlisted 40 students for the interview round.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: In the interview I was asked some programming questions and some puzzles.
Some of the puzzles were:If there are 8 coins out of which 7 are of the same weight and the remaining one with slightly different weight then how to determine the odd coin in three ‘weightings’ using spring balance. All the coins are of the same dimension
There are 100 steps and an ice cube. There is a particular step and all the steps above it from where if the ice cube is thrown then the ice cube would break. What is the minimum number of tries required to determine that step.
Some of the programming questions were:What is binary search? Write down the code for the binary search for finding a number given a series of numbers.
Finding the power of a number. For example 2^3

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I used the same resume in all companies I merely altered my areas of interest depending on the profile on offer.

Round: Test
Experience: I went through some CAT study books for preparation of the written test. The first round was the written test. The paper consisted of logical reasoning and programming questions. There was huge number of questions asked from data structures. The logical reasoning part was pretty simple but the programming part required some prior knowledge on programming.
Tips: Majority of the questions were on basic maths hence I would suggest that one should practice sums from 10th class maths book.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The first interview was the HR interview. They asked me some questions from my resume and also asked me to write down a code that gives the Fibonacci series as the output.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: After 30 minutes there was another interview. In this interview I was asked some questions on data structures particularly on trees. Next they asked me about the various sorting algorithms and asked me to write a code to one of them. Since I was not well verse with the syntaxes they suggested that I write a pseudo code instead of a full-fledged code. Finally they asked me a puzzle. The puzzle was about 3 bulbs having corresponding 3 switches. While operating the switches it was not possible to see the bulbs. The bulbs and the switches were present in different rooms. Further it was given that the room in which the bulbs were present could be entered only once and also the switch could be manipulated only once. I had to specify which switch belonged to which bulb.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our Institute placement cell norms. I had mentioned all my achievements, academic and extracurricular, in my resume.I had the same resume for every company. I only used to change the subjects mentioned as my area of interest to make sure that they are in line with the job profile being offered by the company.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round of selection process was an online test. The test comprised of technical questions as well as general aptitude/logical based questions. It is important to prepare well for technical as well as general aptitude based tests. I practiced questions from CAT preparation material/books to prepare for aptitude based tests.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The second round of the selection process was an interview round. Almost every student had at least 2 interviews.
In the first interview, most of the questions asked were typical HR type questions. They mainly wanted to gauge the candidate’s interest in working for their company. A few technical questions were asked as well. One of the questions asked was about Bubble Sorting Algorithm. Some 30 students appeared for this interview (for Application Development Profile) and 20 students were shortlisted for the next interview.
In the second interview, I was asked some simple mathematical problems and some programming based questions. The questions asked were:
There is a two digit number. The sum of its digit is known. The sum of the number itself and the number obtained by reversing the digits is also known. How would you find the number? How would you implement these equations in a program? There is a string with opening and closing brackets. How would you find (using a program) if in the string there is a closing bracket for every opening bracket? In the third interview, again some programming based questions were asked. As the interviewer himself graduated from the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee, he also asked a few questions from Electrical Engineering. Some of the questions asked were:How would you find the number of words in a given paragraph?
How many registers are there in a microprocessor (say 8085)? How is the information stored during a program run?Questions related to Control Systems.Questions related to Magnetic Levitation.
Tips: If you are thorough with only C++ then mention only C++ as the language known in your resume. Do not mention things/languages/courses you do not know or have not studied. Also Electrical Engineering students have more chance of getting selected in the application development profile as compared to other profiles offered by Oracle (like Systems, Communications etc.) if they have studied the relevant courses or have the slightest of interest or knowledge about programming.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.I usually changed my “Areas of Interest” as per the company profile. For Oracle I mentioned subjects that dealt with coding and also about my other projects which had even little bit of programming.

Round: Test
Experience: The test comprised of different sections. These were related to general aptitude, data interpretation, programming, logical reasoning and character recognition (e.g. you had to find the matching string in a set of given strings). A large number of questions were from topics like data structure and a few were from programming. The paper was difficult – particularly the questions on data structure were very difficult. In data structure questions were mainly asked from trees and stacks. There were different comprehensions that were dedicated to the use of AVL Tree.
Also there were few simple theoretical questions on database management related to primary key, foreign key etc. For the logical questions one can go through the guild website of Oracle, where the complete set of questions asked in the paper can be found. The aptitude test was not difficult but the time allotted was the main factor that affected the performance.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: The first interview was aimed at testing your logical reasoning ability and programming knowledge. The questions here were puzzle based and focused on testing the logical ability of the candidate. An example is if there are 100 beam balls, all of the same weight except one, then what are the minimum number of weighing attempts required to find the odd ball with the help of a beam balance. Then they moved on to asking some very basic technical questions like how to create stacks and queues using any programming language. The logical questions and puzzles asked in this round were quite common ones. One would need to look around on the internet – finding these puzzles etc. is tough but they are available for free.
Tips: Oracle gives a lot of weightage to the projects and the internships. If you had one of these related to some coding stuff then you have an added advantage. Also knowledge of data structures is a must.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the second phase of interview a mixed bag of HR questions (Human Resource) and technical questions were asked. The HR questions included questions like ‘Why do you want to join Oracle’ and ‘What are your future plans?’  The interview process was very smooth and they were not looking for essentially only coding. They were looking for people with good logical thinking and could apply their brains if required for learning and writing codes and programs. The next round was also a technical cum HR interview. They wanted check my willingness to join the company and the fact that whether I will stick with the company or not. The technical questions were simple and they just wanted to check the facts that I had mentioned in my resume.
Tips: A candidate vying to get recruited in the company should have substantial knowledge on data structures.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Oracle is a renowned company. It has been coming for placements in our campus for many years. This time it came with 5 different profiles. The information regarding all these could be best found by attending the Pre Placement Talk.Walk in interview was conducted for students who had studied the course of Data Structures. They had also conducted a written test but no weightage was given to it for those students who had attended the course on data structures.
