Excellent company to work with. At corporate level had designed an excellent working conditions for employees but down line has politics. Buttering is appreciated by few HOD's. HOD will save his favourite (who butter most) and slaughter good employees when comes to redundancy. This culture is not in every department. Salaries are good and on time.

Buttering and reducing staff base on how much butter applied to manager.

- Overall, they promised a lot when they were hiring me on interview, but when I started working for them, none of their promises materialised for me. - I was working in Stevenage office. It took 2.5 hours for me to get every morning and change 3 trains to get there, coming from Canary Wharf area. - Obviously, it looks stupid, but I was doing it as I was promised later the place in London office. However, it never happened. - For the first 6 months we had a great team. We were helping each other, caring for each other, doing our work and helping and mentoring others. - However it all changed when a new young and inexperienced Project Manager came to replace one of our senior. And this is where everyone started to leave. - They hired the guy for Senior Electrical Engineer position, however, he didn't know any AutoCAD, BIM, REVIT, DialUx, Trimble software at all, and was unable to do any drawings in it. And this was the requirement for the role. I was an expert in all those software packages, and he was always asking me to do his drawings, lighting simulations, specifications and reports. - Company promised to give a permanent contract after 3 months probation time, however, when I passed my probation time, they gave me another 3 months, motivating that they have a difficult times with staff members. I decided to stay another 3 months. When another 3 months passed, they didn't give it to me either. ;) They told me, I will have another 3 months extension, and after that I will have my contract. But after another extension, I never had it. I know what you are thinking by now: "You should have left after the first 6 months, when new manager arrived, and everyone started to leave" And you are right I should have. I am expert engineer and highly in demand. So finally yes, I decided to change my career to Architecture. I am now doing PhD in Architecture & Architectural Technology, and I have much better job and work-life balance.

Big companies like KIER, Arthur McKay, Balfour Beatty, they never care about you or your knowledge progression and advancement. They are just trying to get you as a working pawn to do their job they need to be done. So, they use all those promises just to get you inside, in the hope you will stay there for a year or 2. Hoping for the natural human's inertia to change the jobs. However, if you jumped on a wrong train, don't be afraid to change it at any time. - If you just want to see companies like KIER on your CV and portfolio, then go for it. However, if you have a good CV like me and Portfolio for 10 years, choose smaller company, which will appreciate human factor better then those corporations. And remember, you are trying to do everything for the companies, however when the time comes and you need company to do something for you, they will never do anything for you. Just remember that.

Dislikes

- Work balance is crap. They promised few days work from home, but don't keep their promises. Travel time horrible. No time for Life balance. No help with Travel Expenses. No career growth at all, as you are a small cog in a huge machine. No creativity. No career courses help. Nothing what can be interesting for talented engineer and architect like me with 7 patented designs.
