Working with SAIL at Rourkela Steel Plant was a chalenge in itself.When I joined as a trainee engineer in 1975 I was pleasantly surprised to find my batch mates from all over India.The faculty at the training institute were friendly and supportive. My PG in Mech.Design bagged me a posting in the Design Deptt. an enviable posting for some. My first boss ,a pleasantly caring person helped me learn the tricks of the trade. He even wrote a technical handbook. I made innovative suggestions in improving maintenance of the process equipment and was always rewarded for the creativity.I even got an opportunity to be a part of the team to be trained in UK for a few months. Working at SAIL had its own pitfalls.Some colleagues who view you as a threat become friends later.Some have regional feelings but you can overcome that by being impartial and humanly caring. Nothing seriously bad about SAIL except life of a maintenance man is tough in the Steel Plants.Be ready to slog.
