I had joined BYJUS as a creative writer. Initially, the work was assigned systematically and it was a collaborative process. People helped each other to fulfill the targets and no one was left behind. Usually, creative teams at BYJUS have this understanding that being creative requires space and time. There were deadlines, but they could be comfortably met. However, things started going south as early as April 2022....Read More

By April 2022, word started spreading that BYJUS is planning to layoff people. Soon, some of my acquaintances at the company who worked in the media team, were fired. And as the month was about to end, my team of creative writers was disbanded. Thanks to our manager, each of us found a place in other teams. It was an unwelcome change but we had to accept it.
The new team where I was placed did have a system but it was kinda broken. Here, deadlines were tight and there was no room for collaboration. Each member had a very heavy workload and deadlines were to met even if it cost your health in the short term and your life in the long run. And I mean it, literally!
In the new, team within a month of joining we got news that one of our team members who was working from home had passed away. Ironically, we did not know this until our team coordinator called him for the submission of a file and his family informed that he is no more. I must mention that this person was undoubtedly the top performer of our team. I cannot completely blame the company for this as that person too chose to work more than any of us. And that's what it took to set you apart from the rest of the team members.
It shocked us for a while but we did not have time to grieve. All of us had immense workload and the daily grind soon made us forget what a horrible place it was to work. We kept working with our unrealistic deadlines often during the weekends as well. There was no overtime pay, but an understanding with your manager that for the weekend work you are entitled to compensatory off days. And sometimes even on the day you took a leave, either work would follow or calls related to work will.
With all of this, the layoff rounds continued. Media teams were shut down one by one and most creative writers either resigned or were laid off. And by layoff I mean massive layoffs. 60-80% was the number of people being laid off in each team. In May 2023, when there was no one left to fire in the media department, they looked towards the academic content teams. My team of 15 was reduced to 6 people and presently it has 3 people.
The style of layoffs: forced resignations. The scene of my teammates moving around with resignation letters in their hands, coming out one by one from the HR is something I'll never forget.
However, in May, we were presented with appraisal forms which were supposed to be circulated in January. We had some hope that all that hard work would finally pay off. One on one meetings took place and new responsibilities were discussed.
In the middle of the month our VP held a meeting and we got to know that the appraisals may not happen after all. We were crushed and another round of layoffs followed.
Funny part is, when I put in my resignation in between two rounds of layoff, instead of approving it they tried to delay it. I got out somehow.
As of now, I'm trying my best to get my final settlement. The credit date of my settlement has been extended several times. Each time I send them a mail, they reply with a new date and keep extending the deadline for credit by 10 days each time. The organisation is now scamming its own employees by not giving them what is rightfully theirs. Recently they credited the PF dues of several months after the news got out in the media.
If you are a jobseeker who is looking into this company, I would strongly suggest you to look past it. I hope my review will give you enough context as to why it is a terrible place to work....Read More
