Is this culture normal?

Joined a new company recently. Have heard a lot about the good culture within the team. However, within a month of joining, I saw one of the designer sharing the designs on the teams app at 2 AM in the morning. Upon asking him the next day, got to know that he had committed a deadline to his manager. However, the project was heavier than what he expected and it took him more time, so to meet the deadline he was working even after the office hours till late night. Shocked as hell! Do you guys still think the culture is positive and non-toxic which they bragged about initially?

While it's commendable to be dedicated to one's work, consistently working late nights can be a sign of a toxic work culture, even if the company boasts a positive image. How are you planning to navigate this situation and ensure a healthy work-life balance?

The culture can be toxic only if employees are forced to do something which they don't want to do. One aspect of this story is that company should not encourage this kind of late working to keep culture good, it also create a wrong expectation in the mind of the manager. But the other aspect is that company is giving liberty to the guy to submit his work as per his availability and convenience. I had few subordinates who (during WFH) used to roam around and enjoy during day time and were submitting their work in night because it was more convenient to them. I was ok until it was not affecting their work quality and deliverables. So branding this culture toxic is little unfair until you find them pushing unreasonable demands on the employee.

[jackofalltrade](username) i agree with you but in this case which i've mentioned, it was clearly a case of working overtime without getting paid for it.

[a senior quality assurance engineer](username) With my own experience of working in every kind of company (8 overall), I can tell you that no one can make you work more than what you want if you are not up for it. In start, there will be some resistance but later everyone will come to the terms to this. And if you are good in your skills, no one will be bothered about it.
