- Ax campaigners and retailers want the UK government to close a loophole preventing a flood of cheap imports coming from marketplaces such as Shein and Temu after the EU started phasing out an exemption on customs duties for low-value parcels. The rule change, which followed the United States, could hit trade into the EU and US by marketplaces such as Shein, leading to a shock 20% cut in expectations for a planned $62bn (£50bn) IPO on the London Stock Exchange. The Fair Tax Foundation said the UK can expect more Shein and Temu products unless the government 'tightens gaping loopholes'.
- Chair of JD Sports Andy Higginson said the government should close the loophole to ensure there was a “level playing field” for all retailers in the UK. Bosses at Sainsbury’s, Superdry, Ryman, Robert Dyas and the British Independent Retailers Association have previously urged the UK government to change the rules.
