Pentax holds its own in shooting matches with the big boys. As a pioneering leader in the camera industry, it established its presence with cameras, lenses, astronomical telescopes, binoculars, and photographic accessories. Pentax is well known for affordable 35mm cameras, but it also makes technically innovative digital cameras and lenses. Other products include surveying instruments; medical instruments and equipment such as endoscopes and ceramics; closed-circuit TV lenses; and eyeglasses, eyeglass frames, and ophthalmologic instruments. Its products are sold through dealers worldwide. Pentax was acquired by optics maker Hoya in late 2007 after spurning a bid earlier in the year.
