CentOS Connect conference announces return of Firefox
- CentOS Connect conference returned with the announcement of Firefox returning as a native package on CentOS and an immutable variant of CentOS Stream.
- AlmaLinux is doing things its own way while exploring an internal upstream distro, AlmaLinux Kitten, to rival other free Red Hat Enterprise Linux-alikes.
- The event focused on the folks using and maintaining CentOS Stream and its relatives (or RHELatives) with an interesting update like the return of a natively packaged version of the Firefox web browser.
- For those who want to install additional repositories, subsystems, or web browsers, the process can be complicated.
- The announcement of Firefox 128 ESR as the current long-term supported release returning to CentOS was met with applause.
- There were several talks about the OKD project- the upstream community to Red Hat OpenShift and its underlying technologies.
- While Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS can be found in OpenShift, it is not available separately.
- A free, open, community-driven immutable version of CentOS Stream Core OS could potentially be of interest to people outside of OpenShift and OKD.
- SUSE is still working on its immutable server distro, codenamed ALP, while Canonical has been maintaining Ubuntu Core for over a decade now.
- From the lofty heights of its $34 billion valuation in 2018, Red Hat's Linux folks look very tiny, thus some people in the Red Hat-using world may be unfamiliar with other distros and their build or installation tools.

FIPS 140-3 certified modules now available for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
- The cryptographic modules for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) have been certified by NIST’s CMVP and are now available for use.
- FIPS 140-3 certified modules are now available to Ubuntu Pro subscribers.
- FIPS 140-2 is being phased out, and this certification ensures that Ubuntu users can stay up to date with the latest standards
- OpenSSL v3.0.5, Libgcrypt v1.9.4, GnuTLS v3.7.3, Linux kernel v5.15.0, StrongSwan v5.9.5 are the certified cryptographic modules available with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on multiple hardware platforms including Intel/AMD x86_64, ARM64, IBM z15.
- Canonical is working to bring FIPS 140-3 certification to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
- Canonical builds and maintains a large number of Linux kernels, each of which are tailored to specific hardware and operating environments.
- For cloud platforms, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, customized kernels are being built by Canonical, which are derived from the generic kernel and FIPS patches.
- Canonical is building the cloud kernels nonetheless and is making them available to customers under the same guarantees as the updated FIPS modules.
- NIST certificates for the FIPS 140-3 modules introduced in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS are currently interim certificates, and Canonical will periodically re-validate the FIPS modules and obtain new certificates to maintain their security.
- For existing FIPS 140-2 modules, relevant to users of Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus), 18.04 (Bionic Beaver), and 20.04 (Focal Fossa), it is being phased out, and upgrading them to FIPS 140-3 is not feasible.

How to reduce data storage costs by up to 50% with Ceph
- By swapping out the CPU in a server configuration we can explore how much additional cost would be introduced by adding QAT offload engines.
- Adding QAT does increase the cost of a Ceph storage server by $560, or an increase of 0.25%.
- Even data that is already stored in a compressed format can benefit from inline compression in a Ceph storage system, with other data types seeing greater compression and thus space savings.
- Using the server configuration that includes QAT offload engines, the effective cost to store a single GB of data is $1.90.
- The greater the compression ratio, the less capacity required, which in turn reduces the number of storage servers required, and less network ports, which leads to a reduction in power consumption and facility costs too!
- These savings apply to all types of disks, including lower cost NL-SAS, as the compression is applied inline as the object storage damon (OSD) processes client IO.
- For data sets that can be compressed the additional cost is easily mitigated, and for data that has the greatest compression ratios the cost savings become significant.
- Maximize your storage efficiency with Ceph, on 12th February 2025, at 5PM CET, 11AM ET.
- Using Intel® QAT with Canonical Ceph can help to reduce data storage costs by up to 50%.
- The largest driver of cost in any storage system are the disks themselves.
