India’s ambitions to build indigenous telecom network gear stuck in limbo
- India's telecom operators including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have been slow to adopt O-RAN technology in India, which would enable them to work with multiple vendors on cellular network equipment instead of relying on just Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung.
- The telecoms reacted prematurely to the technology when it came out, said Professor V Sridhar from the International Institute of Information Technology in Bengaluru. He suggested that telcos are looking for a noticeable material advantage before flocking toward O-RAN.
- O-RAN technology has not yet been proven to have a material advantage over proprietary software.
- In India, the idea of O-RAN had initially excited telcos but its deployment has been hampered by issues of interoperability, security risks, and limited scale and maturity.
- While O-RAN technology in India is not at carrier-grade reliability level yet, experts believe that the technology could become a competitive alternative compared to proprietary architecture by the time 6G is standardized in 2030.
- Prem Singh, Assistant Professor, IIIT Bangalore said that the most important development towards the trend was the government funding of ₹150 crore under the National Mission of Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical System (MMICTS) scheme to develop advanced wireless communication technology.
- Kunal Bajaj, CEO and Co-founder, CloudExtel, India’s leading Network-as-a-service provider, said the limited large-scale deployment of O-RAN is a complex issue in India on a ‘circle’ basis.
- Aside from problems of scale, deployment and market dynamics, O-RAN deployment in India has been made more difficult by issues such as spectrum allocation.
- While Indian telcos are taking their time to adopt O-RAN technology, Chinese firms have been working on O-RAN networks and the Chinese government has also been promoting the O-RAN Alliance, an industry group that promotes open technology to reduce reliance on proprietary suppliers. The US has also been pushing O-RAN and critical of what it sees as an over-reliance by some countries on Chinese technology.
- By 2025, none of the collaborations between Indian telecoms and O-RAN vendors had taken off. Tata Consulting Services (TCS) has partnered with state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for O-RAN deployment in India.
