MTNL was setup on 1st April, 1986 by the Government of India to upgrade the quality of telecom services, expand the telecom network, introduce new services and to raise revenue for telecom development needs of India 's key metro cities of Delhi & Mumbai. MTNL is the principal provider of fixed-line telecommunication service in the two Metropolitan Cities of Delhi and Mumbai. It offers mobile services in the city of Delhi including four peripheral towns Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad & Gaziabad and the Mumbai city along with the areas falling under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, New Mumbai Corporation and Thane Municipal Corporation.
The authorized capital of the Company is Rs. 800 crores. The Paid up Share Capital is Rs. 630 crores divided into 63 crore share of Rs. 10 each. At present, 56.25% equity shares are held by President of India & her nominees and remaining 43.75% shares are held by FIIs, Financial Institutions, Banks, Mutual Funds and others including individual investors. MTNL has been given Navratna status in 1997 and was listed in New York Stock Exchange in 2001.
In more than two decades of its operations, there has been all-round development & growth and improved operational efficiency. Presently, MTNL is providing a host of telecom services that include fixed telephone service, GSM (including 3G services) & CDMA based Mobile service, Internet, Broadband, ISDN and Leased Line services., MTNL has been in the forefront of offering state of the art technology based telecommunications services to its customers at most affordable prices. MTNL has been the first to launch some of the latest telecom technologies in the country like ADSL2+ & VDSL2 in broadband, IPTV on MPEG4 technology, VOIP and 3G Mobile service.

CARE Upgrades Rating On MTNL's Bonds As Government Makes Timely Debt Repayments
- CARE Ratings has upgraded the bond rating of MTNL to CARE AAA citing timely debt repayments and a stable outlook.
- This follows MTNL's adherence to the sovereign guarantee bond payment mechanism with eight consecutive successful payments observed.
- CARE Ratings has assigned a stable outlook to MTNL's bonds worth Rs 24,071 crore.
- Previously, MTNL had defaulted on its bond repayments due to cash flow issues.

MTNL Share Price Hits Three-Month High Even As It Fails To Pay Bond Interest
- Shares of MTNL rose as much as 13.7% to Rs 61.87 apiece, the highest level since Aug. 30.
- Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. fails to pay the eighth semi-annual interest for the 6.85% MTNL Bond Series VI due on Dec. 21.
- MTNL cites insufficient funds as the reason for not being able to make the interest payment.
- According to the Tri-Partite Agreement, in case of a default, the Government of India is obliged to make the payment to MTNL.

MTNL Misses Escrow Transfer For Bond Payment Due On Dec. 1
- Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) was unable to fund the escrow account for bond interest payment due on Dec. 1, due to insufficient funds.
- The bond payment is governed by a structured payment mechanism under a tripartite agreement involving MTNL, the Department of Telecommunications, and Beacon Trusteeship Ltd.
- MTNL's failure to deposit necessary funds into the escrow account can invoke the sovereign guarantee provided by the Government of India to cover the payment.
- In the quarter ended Sept. 30, MTNL recorded a consolidated net loss of Rs 890.28 crore, compared to a loss of Rs 773.46 crore in the preceding three-month period.
