OCR is Dying, but Not in India
- Optical character recognition has been a critical technique in converting scanned documents, images, and PDFs into machine-readable data but with modern large language models (LLMs), which are capable of processing large volumes of data in multiple languages while retaining high performance, it is taking a back seat for startups that are focusing on English language. OCR is still vital to Indian startups because of the country’s linguistic diversity.
- Bhashini, AI4Bharat and Sarvam are some of the home-grown Indian initiatives and startups that offer frameworks and applications for scanning texts from images into machine-readable format.
- Thanks to synthetic data, companies such as Sarvam AI are training their models while retaining high performance. This reduces the manual process of collecting data with OCR, which can be time-consuming and costly.
- LLMs are able to process signals such as handwriting, low-quality scans, and unusual fonts, and are much faster at processing large batches of text. OCR, on the other hand, can fail on handwritten text, complex layouts and diverse fonts.
- However, Indian languages like Hindi, Odia, Marathi, and Telugu have a dearth of digitised content, and most of the content is stored in libraries and old texts.
- For example, focusing on converting printed or handwritten forms of various Indian languages, OCR is the preferred method to ensure the quality of text in several books that cannot be obtained through synthetic generation.
- Indian initiatives have focus on scaling up OCR capabilities to get high-quality data from hundreds of thousands of books in Indic languages.
- OCR is still essential for simple text extraction tasks and works well with ABBYY FineReader for complex documents like medical or legal documents that have unusual fonts or low-quality images.
- The complexity of the subject has led many experts to disagree about the future of OCR. However, with the cost of running such models decreasing and LLMs verifying Indic language text where documents are uploaded, OCR may cease to be enough.
- Indian startups downsizing, but LLMs speedily scaling up also show its hazy future.
