Database Team Lead

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Database Team Leader to manage and lead our database management team. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems, ensuring their performance, security, and scalability. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including software development, infrastructure, and business stakeholders, to support the organizations data-driven initiatives and optimize data management processes.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database administration, leadership experience, and a deep understanding of database technologies. You should be capable of mentoring and guiding a team while aligning with organizational goals and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

• Team Leadership & Development:
• Lead, mentor, and manage a team of database administrators, developers, and analysts.
• Foster a collaborative and high-performance team environment.
• Provide coaching and professional development to team members.
• Set clear goals and performance expectations, conduct regular performance reviews, and provide feedback.
• Database Architecture & Design:
• Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of database systems, ensuring they meet performance, scalability, and security requirements.
• Collaborate with development teams to design data models and architectures for new applications and features.
• Ensure data integrity, consistency, and reliability across systems and databases.
• Database Administration:
• Oversee the installation, configuration, and management of database systems (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, etc.).
• Ensure optimal database performance, including query optimization, indexing, and capacity planning.
• Monitor database health, troubleshoot performance issues, and resolve technical problems.
• Security & Compliance:
• Implement database security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Oversee access controls, encryption, backup, and recovery strategies.
• Ensure adherence to data privacy and governance policies.
• Collaboration & Communication:
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, data scientists, business analysts, and IT operations, to align database strategies with organizational objectives.
• Provide technical guidance and support to internal stakeholders, ensuring the team’s contributions align with business needs.
• Act as a point of escalation for database-related issues.
• Project Management & Reporting:
• Lead database-related projects, including migrations, upgrades, and performance tuning.
• Prepare and deliver regular status reports to senior leadership regarding database health, issues, and improvement initiatives.
• Ensure that database-related projects are completed on time and within budget.
• Continuous Improvement:
• Stay up-to-date with the latest database technologies, tools, and best practices.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation within database operations.
• Evaluate and implement new technologies to improve database performance and efficiency.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
• 5+ years of experience in database administration or management, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
• Expertise in relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.
• Strong experience with cloud-based databases (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL, Google Cloud SQL).
• In-depth knowledge of database architecture, performance tuning, backup and recovery strategies, and data security.
• Experience with database automation and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash).
• Proven experience managing high-performance, scalable, and secure database environments.
• Solid understanding of data governance, compliance, and security best practices (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).

• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) and Big Data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
• Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for database management.
• Experience in performance benchmarking and load testing of databases.
