Mysql Database Administrator

Role & responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced MySQL Database Administrator (L2) to provide operational support, maintenance, and optimization of MySQL database environments. The ideal candidate will be responsible for database administration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, replication, backup, and security while ensuring high availability and reliability of databases. This role requires close collaboration with application, infrastructure, and DevOps teams to ensure seamless database operations.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provide L2 support for MySQL databases, troubleshooting database-related issues and ensuring high availability.
• Perform installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades of MySQL and MariaDB databases.
• Monitor and optimize database performance, including query optimization, indexing, and storage management.
• Implement and maintain backup and recovery solutions using tools such as MySQL Dump, Percona XtraBackup, or MySQL Enterprise Backup.
• Manage database security, user access control, roles, privileges, and compliance with security policies.
• Support MySQL replication (Master-Slave, Master-Master) and clustering solutions (Percona XtraDB Cluster, Galera Cluster, MySQL Group Replication).
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to high availability, replication failures, and database corruption.
• Optimize query performance using MySQL Explain Plan, slow query logs, and tuning techniques.
• Work with developers to optimize stored procedures, triggers, and queries for better efficiency.
• Document database configurations, troubleshooting guides, and standard operating procedures.
• Participate in on-call rotations to handle critical database issues and escalations.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong understanding of MySQL architecture, storage engines (InnoDB, MyISAM), and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in SQL queries, indexing strategies, and stored procedures.
• Experience with MySQL replication (asynchronous, semi-synchronous) and clustering solutions.
• Hands-on experience with backup and recovery strategies, including point-in-time recovery.
• Strong troubleshooting skills in query performance, database locks, and high availability.
• Experience in Linux-based environments (Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL) and shell scripting.
• Knowledge of database monitoring tools like Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), MySQL Enterprise Monitor, or Nagios.
• Understanding of database security best practices, access control, and data encryption.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred candidate profile

Experience with cloud-based MySQL services (AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL, Azure Database for MySQL).

• Familiarity with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra) is a plus.
• Knowledge of DevOps tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with Percona Server for MySQL and advanced MySQL tuning techniques.
• Scripting knowledge in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for database automation.
• Familiarity with ITIL processes and database change management.
