Job Description


Duties & Responsibilities:
Direct Patient Care

  • Ensures smooth functioning of NICU & PICU.
  • Ensures that all admission, discharge, transfers and procedures are carried out

according to the correct procedure.

  • Assists in the direct care of the patient as and when required.
  • Document patients' treatment plans, interventions, outcomes, or plan revisions.
  • Document patients' medical histories and assessment findings.
  • She/he oversees that total health needs of all patients are met.
  • Ensures safety, comfort and good personal hygiene of all patients.
  • Assists in planning and implementation of emergency procedures.
  • Makes herself /himself available during code situations, if any.
  • Sees that proper observation records of the patients are made and necessary information imparted to the concerned authorities.
  • Takes Nursing rounds.
  • Ensures proper utilization and availability of inpatient beds.
  • Ensures irate customers are attended to and made comfortable.
  • Advocate for patients' and families' needs, or provide emotional support for patients and their families.
  • Updates the hospital census and other statistical records.
  • Prepares the list of all surgeries, procedures and international patients.


Infection Control NICU & PICU

  • With patient safety as the primary goal of all nursing practices, here are the primary responsibilities and role:
  1. Identify infectious disease processes

2. Epidemiologic and surveillance investigations
3. Control and prevention of transmission of infectious agents

  • An Infection control assists developing and implementing procedures and policies, creates tools relating to infection diseases, and collaborates in auditing.
  • monitoring hazardous procedures and practices, and participate in documentation related to quality standard and service specifications.


Supervision and Administration

  • Ensures safe and clean environment.
  • Set up and monitoring medical equipment and devices such as cardiac monitors, mechanical ventilators and alarms, oxygen delivery devices, transducers, and pressure lines.
  • Ensuring that ventilators, monitors and other types of medical equipment function properly.
  • Ensure that equipment or devices are properly stored after use.
  • Identify malfunctioning equipment or devices.
  • Ensures availability of medications and patient care equipment.
  • Establishes and reinforces standards prescribed in the procedures and manuals of

the department and the hospital and policies that are in force.

  • Manages absenteeism / inadequacy of staff efficiently during the shift as per laid

down hospital policy.

  • Deals appropriately with any adverse situation that has occurred in any department

and reports to the concerned authorities.

  • Reports about any medico-legal cases during the shift.
  • Writes and submits confidential reports of the staff.
  • Reports and documents medication errors/adverse events.
  • Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of nursing practice protocols.
  • Plan, provide, or evaluate educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary health care team members, and community members.
  • Supervise and monitoring nursing staff.
  • Reporting of Incidents.
  • Mapping of Quality Indicators in NICU & PICU.
  • Responsible for the Inventory Management in the assigned Area.


Educational Functions

  • Organizes orientation programmes for new staff.
  • Organizes formal and informal ward teaching, conducts bedside clinics and demonstrations.
  • Conducts NICU/PICU conferences/meetings.
  • Gives incidental teaching to patients, relatives, Staff Nurses, students and the domestic staff.
  • Guides in formulation of Nursing care studies, and nursing care plans etc.
  • Evaluates the staff’s performance and submits reports to the nursing administration.
  • Encourages staff development programme in NICU & PICU.


  • The Incharge NICU & PICU will be on call and available 24/7.
  • Will be responsible for any other duties assigned by the Nursing Superintendent from time to time.
