Role & responsibilities

The role of the Legal Copyeditor is to perform copyediting, content editing and proofreading for a

variety of legal publications. This work will involve sense reading of legal content to ensure readability in keeping with legal wording and terminology.

Preferred candidate profile

Copyediting of legal content in terms of reading for sense, legal language and terminology, correcting spelling and grammar, and applying house style

Validation of legal citations for cases, statutes and statutory instruments

Quality control check of legal content copyedited by other copyeditors

Training other copyeditors/trainees in all aspects of legal copyediting

Job Description:

• A degree in law (bachelor's/master's degree) from a recognized institution is a must
• Basic knowledge/experience of Commonwealth laws and experience of working on content dealing with these laws
• Proven experience in copyediting legal content independently without the need for work to be
  rechecked.
• Ability to suggest appropriate corrections to ambiguous or unclear sentences without altering the meaning of legal matter/content
• Must have domain knowledge of legal terminology and requirements (validation of citations for cases, statutes and statutory instruments, etc.) as well as familiarity with legal phrases and expressions
• Experience of working with LexisNexis (LN) content as well as knowledge of LN workflows/products would be an added advantage
• Should possess good communication skills as well as good writing and comprehension skills
• Should be able to demonstrate an interest in working with legal material/content and articulate how subject matter knowledge can be leveraged to copyedit legal matter/content
• Candidates must be willing to associate on a full time basis
