Senior Sybase and Cassandra Database Administrator

We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) with expertise in Sybase and Cassandra database systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, managing, and optimizing database environments to ensure performance , security , and reliability . This role requires in-depth knowledge of relational (Sybase) and NoSQL (Cassandra) database technologies, including their unique architectures, configurations, and use cases.

Key Responsibilities:

• Database Administration:
  • Install, configure, and upgrade Sybase and Cassandra database environments.
  • Manage database schemas, objects (e. g. , tables, indexes, stored procedures), and clusters.
  • Plan and execute database migrations and upgrades with minimal downtime.
  • Monitor and analyze database performance for both Sybase and Cassandra .
  • Optimize queries, indexes, and configurations for efficient data retrieval and processing.
  • Conduct capacity planning to ensure databases meet performance demands.
  • Design and implement backup strategies for both Sybase and Cassandra databases.
  • Develop disaster recovery plans and test recovery procedures.
  • Configure and maintain replication and high-availability setups (e. g. , Sybase Replication Server , Cassandras replication strategies).
  • Implement robust security controls, including authentication, authorization, and encryption.
  • Regularly apply security patches and updates to both database systems.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory security standards.
  • Diagnose and resolve database-related issues, including connectivity, performance, and data integrity.
  • Provide on-call support for database incidents and outages.
  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to address database requirements.
  • Work with developers to design efficient schemas for Sybase (relational) and Cassandra (NoSQL) .
  • Provide guidance on best practices for data modeling, indexing, and query optimization.
  • Review and optimize SQL and CQL (Cassandra Query Language) queries.
  • Set up and maintain database monitoring tools for Sybase and Cassandra .
  • Automate routine maintenance tasks using scripting languages (e. g. , Bash , Python ).
  • Maintain detailed documentation of database configurations, processes, and maintenance activities.
  • Generate regular reports on database health, performance, and usage metrics.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Required Skills:

  • Sybase :
    • Expertise in Sybase ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) and Sybase Replication Server .
    • Strong knowledge of transaction management, indexing, and stored procedures.
    • Familiarity with Sybase utilities such as BCP , ISQL , and DBCC .
  • Cassandra :
    • Proficiency with Cassandra architecture , including partitioning, replication, and consistency levels.
    • Experience with Cassandra tools like Nodetool , CQLSH , and DataStax OpsCenter .
    • Understanding of Cassandras data modeling and distributed nature.
  • Strong skills in query optimization , performance tuning , and database troubleshooting .
  • Experience with backup and recovery tools for Sybase and Cassandra .
  • Solid understanding of Linux/Unix systems and shell scripting .

• Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with cloud database solutions (e. g. , AWS , Azure , or GCP ) for Sybase and Cassandra .
  • Knowledge of automation tools and DevOps practices (e. g. , Ansible , Terraform ).
  • Exposure to Apache Kafka or similar messaging systems for data streaming.

Education and Experience:

• Education :
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science , Information Technology , or a related field.
• Experience :
  • 5+ years of experience as a Sybase DBA .
  • 5+ years of experience as a Cassandra DBA .
• Certifications :
  • Relevant certifications (e. g. , Sybase ASE Administrator , Apache Cassandra Certified Professional ) are a plus.
